What flowers go best as border for a driveway?

There is a spae between the fence and the concrete of the driveway that would be perfet for a nice flower or moss Bed, But i am not real sure what type of flowers would look best.

What flowers go best as border for a driveway?
petunias ( have to replant every year)

impatiens( have to replant)

asylum ( have to replant)

hastas are great.. they are green and leafy.. they can reproduce and you can splint therm and move them to other areas.. but don't get colorful flowers...

portulaca ( have to replace every year) but it covers ground great and the flowers look like little rose bushes.. the good thing about these are the flowers are all different colors on each plant...

it all also depends on the placing of your area.. is it full sun? most of the replacing plants,,, are very cheap if you go to like walmart and get a flat of them.. the other good thing is that if you don't like them at the end of the year the die of and you can put something else there next year...

you can also put in Shasta Daisey.. they come back and this year i found at K mart.. an African Daisey they are with and on the end all dark purple.. the are very pretty... they come back....

you can also put down Begonias.. they are kinda pricey but get nice in sized and are very pretty....

good luck and happy gardening!
Reply:alyssum.....will grow anywhere under any conditions and smells wonderful, usually in whites, pinks, and purple shades
Reply:Does your driveway area get full sun or shade? If it gets sun then I would go with some Creeping Phlox, or aka Phlox Carpet. It's a very fast spreading perennial (which means it will come back every year) and it's low and compact. You dont want anything tall boardering your drive. It comes in blue, red, pink, or white. It can grow in full sun to even partail shade. Here's a link with pictures of it and where you could buy some. http://springhillnursery.com/search.asp?...

But this site can be a bit pricey, Lowes and Home Depot normally sell Phlox at a little better price. Now if your drive is more on the really shady side, I would plant Vinca, Evergreen. It's also a fast growing perennial and it has blue flowers during the spring to early summer. After the blooms are gone, you still have the dark green foliage. It tolerates even the worst soils and it's good in the shade, part shade, to full sun. Here's a link to it. http://springhillnursery.com/product.asp...

Good luck and hoped this gave you some ideas.
Reply:Go to a garden store and ask to see some Wandering Flock. Only grows a few inches tall but is thick and colorful, comes back every year, it spreads but you can trim it. Very nice. Also I like Sweet Alyssium.
Reply:Hosta for shady are, Daylilies for sunny area.
Reply:hostas can fill in, only buy one though because they can be divided and multiply every year. You can divide them over and over again. Find someone who has some, they would probably be happy to split them.

Is it ok to send flowers to girlfriend at her new workplace?

Basically I've never sent flowers to my girlfriend before. We've been together about 6 months. She starts a new job next week and I'm thinking of sending her some flowers. Is it ok to send them to her new place of work do you think or is that too soon? She won't even know her colleagues or anything so I'm not so sure.

Also, I'm not 100% sure what flowers she likes because she has never really struck me as someone in to that sort of thing but then all girls like flowers right?

Should I send some and if so, how do I go about finding out what ones she likes? Are red roses a winner every time?

Cheers!

Is it ok to send flowers to girlfriend at her new workplace?
why send flowers where she works in the first place when you can as easily give them to her after work yourself?

aside from a guesture to everyone emplyed there, that shes "my" girlfriend I dont see another need for it, especially since you are already going out 6 months now.

also its a new job, you would want to avoid making it more stressful for her... i wouldnt.. but thats just my humble opinion.
Reply:go ahead with your plan...you can also send her a tulips,or blue rose...your a one heck of a guy..your girlfriend is very luck for having you...
Reply:hey! that would be sweet. try to ask her friends about what flowers your girlfriend adores. goodluck dude!
Reply:ohhh it would be sweet of u! but, do it after she adjusts the new environment...
Reply:i think its a wonderful idea maybe ring the boss and see if its ok. caution if she is not into flowers maybe hayfever is the reason and her mum should know both the answer to that as well as her favorite blossoms. good luck with the job for her too.
Reply:It is never inappropriate to send flowers to your girlfriend, especially as a congratulatory gift on her new job. As far as what kind of flowers - personalize them! Look up her name on one of those baby name sites and see if it matches to either a specific type of flower or a color - I got lucky with my current interest, as her first and middle name translate to "beautiful lily". If that doesn't work, then yes, red roses are a winner every time. Although P.S. - no, not all girls like flowers. I used to work with a girl who did not like the flowers I sent her anonymously, so make sure she would appreciate them before plunking down fifty bucks.
Reply:Aww, very sweet. Well i would talk to her friends and see what kind of flowers she likes. Then i would leave it a couple of weeks so she can get to no some people, then you should.

Lovley surprise!

What is the value of flowers?

what can flower mean?what is the moral value of the flowers? in wich occasion can it offered?can it replace words?wich words?is giving flowers is more significance than telling words?what flowers can reflect and express?and how can help us?

What is the value of flowers?
well flowers are an action and the onld proverb says actuons speak loudewr then words - the type of flower can also speak volumes -

if a man picks her favorite flower he really listens to her if he buys the kind she is allergic to (after she told him of the allergy) - he is not buying them for her to make her happy - he is buying them because he thinks he has to (maybe he did something wrong) and he is putting little thought into what she really want (or likes or is allergic to)
Reply:I think the value of flowers means "Temporary"

It will die soon, but if you know how to use it Temporary means good.

For example. honey comes from flowers,

flowers to be used as gift to make up or to cheer people up and so on.

Appropriate flowers for an Indian lady?

Hi, the guy who has been making some costumes for me has a wife (Indian Lady) who is very poorly and I would like to take her some flowers when I collect my costumes, what sort would be correct, as I know in British culture that certain flowers have particular meanings, eg red roses (love) white roses (eternity) Lillies for funerals etc etc and if there are similar traditions in India I would not like to upset her by giving her something inappropriate. so any suggestions please.

Appropriate flowers for an Indian lady?
I love those exotic orchids usually come in bright pink or white and look very tropical. They are origanally from asia i think

i have one it was £10 they last much longer than cut flowers

Hope she gets well soon !

( moth orchid is the common name if you google it you can look at a pic the flower is stunning !!

Reply:Yes I love flowers. My favorite is one called a four o'clock. This flower is in a tubular shape for most of the day when it's closed but then in the afternoon at around 4 p.m. every day (if you have a lot of the flowers formed already for that day) they will open up. The face of the flower is shaped like a little star and they have a nice sweet smell to them. These flowers stay open all night long until early in the a.m. like around 7 a.m.

Here's a site where you can not only see some pictures of them but also read about a special tribute project:

RULES ABOUT GIVING FLOWERS TOO SOON??????? Is this for real???

Heed the rules of FTD.

Flowers on or after the first few dates: too much too soon, and reeking of desperation.

Flowers anytime after we've had sex: welcome, romantic, and thoughtful.

ok...so if that is a rule...then what the hell do you do if you dont believe in sex before marriage?...are you just screwed??...lol...do u ever give flowers then?

My flower garden has formed a gel like substance around the base of some of the flowers. What could it be?

It has rained for a couple days and now some of the flowers have formed a clear, gel-like substance around the base of them. They look like clumps of crushed ice-cubes at first sight. It's very strange! Any ideas what this could be?

My flower garden has formed a gel like substance around the base of some of the flowers. What could it be?
could be snails. sprinkle snail pellets around the ground. works like a charm. snails love to eat lots of different kinds of flowers. also could be clusters of eggs of some kind of insect. keep an eye on the flowers. if they dont come to any harm from the alien blob hurray for you. i would watch it just to see what came out of it.
Reply:you could have a fungus perhaps watering at wrong time of the day, best to water at night or early am especially in the summer
Reply:sounds a lot like moisture crytals or water retaining gel to me. if you didn't use them at time of planting, its possible they were already in the pots when purchased.
Reply:If you or your gardener used a water retaining gel it is very possible that this is what you see. Dig it into the soil it will help in drought situations.

Wrong flowers!!!!!!!!!!!!?

A new business was opening and one of the owner's friends wanted to send him flowers for the occasion.

They arrived at the new business site and the owner read the card,.... "Rest in Peace."

The owner was angry and called the florist to complain.

After he had told the florist of the obvious mistake and how angry he was, the florist replied,

"Sir, I'm really sorry for the mistake, but rather than getting angry, you should imagine this: somewhere, there is a funeral taking place today, and they have flowers with a note saying,... 'Congratulations on your new location!'"

Dried Flowers?

Hello everyone!

I recieved a vase full of beautiful roses a week ago. The other plants in my vase are starting to wilt and my roses are starting to! I want to keep the flowers as a memory. Do i keep them in the vase, or do i take them out individually and let them dry out? Do i need to keep them pressed in a book? Also...what are some good projects to with dried flowers such as roses?

THANKS!!!

Dried Flowers?
See this article from Pro Flowers to learn how to properly dry flowers.

Reply:Hmm.. Take them out the sun and let them dried...or pressed them in a book for about a few days.

My friend did was she paint the dried flowers and place it in a vase then decorate it with ribbons...

Other is you can decorate a certain card or even in a canvas and frame it..I also suggest that you could try to combine some other flowers too..
Reply:hang them upside down and spray with hairspray

let them dry out for a week
Reply:press 8 in a book..

What flowers would you use for weddings.....?

I am getting married in 2009, and trying to make final decisions on what flowers to use, not ordering yet of course, just need to get ideas before I get prssed for time in a year after putting it off....

Heres why I ask the question....

Our wedding colors are red, black and white.

I am wearing a white dress with red trim and some beading

I dont want a white bouquet for me. Would prefer one for

bridesmaids.

I do have my heart set on a red bouquet... but dont like the

bouquets with daisies ( I want big flowers like daisies

or roses though)

Here's where it gets difficult, we are a picky couple and are

trying to be a little different

He doesn't like roses for the bouqet ( and doesnt want to

use them) And I don't like daisies.

I am budgeting so nothing too expensive. (June wedding)

I want something elegant.

I do like calla lillies, but cant find in red, thought about carnations but still open to suggestions.

What flowers would you use for weddings.....?
ok.. so here is where you are.. colors do not have to be completely done through the flowers..

I love the classic look of the red rose bouquet.. on the red and white dress... but if it's not you it's not you.. Love gerbera daisies... red tulips do sound right for you.. white tulips for the girls.. wrap your handle in white.. the girls handles in black with red dresses.. love tulips for you. for your ceremony and reception.. love gerbera daisies.. red is fantastic.. callas do come in red.. but you have or order them as a mini calla.. it's not bright red but a good florist can dye them to a deep red color. Any good florist will show you books.. but it all depends on the style of wedding.. how many girls you need to fit in to the budget, inside outside? so much.. you need to find a good florist and sit with them. last tip.. from the bottom of my heart. do not plan your wedding to death.. too many details is like too many features in a car.. the more you have the more there is to break.. if a detail is going to ruin your day then you shouldn't plan so many details... just enjoy your day..
Reply:The only real red flowers out there are roses, carnations...(which are too common and alot of older people like them because they are "cheap") gladioli's, gerbera daisies, tulips-( do not last long out of water but good for centerpieces),

I suggest tropical, they are expensive but you can get away w/ less flowers for your bqt. ( anthurium, ginger, heliconia etc...) they do have calla lilies in a burgundy.

yeah, you do sound "picky" good luck and go to the florist fully prepared.

open up ANY and all magazines, cut out any pictures you like, we/ they can mimic.
Reply:they have a kind of flower that are kinda like daisy's

but they are called Gerberers? (that might be spelt wrong)

but for flowers you should just use your favorites :)
Reply:I love roses. And they come in a bunch of different colors. Go with roses. =]
Reply:What about a bouquet of red tulips?
Reply:sounds beautiful and I'm pleased to hear that you are leaning toward a red bouquet instead of black, because a truly black flower has yet to be cultivated... i google imaged a bouquet you might think is PERFECT! this bride is lovely and the bouquet unique. let me know what you think!? I hope the link comes through...

http://elements-by-caroline-photography....
Reply:Hi and congratulations!

Why no roses.....I love roses...red roses are so romantic.

But...it's your call. DO NOT use carnations....they are not elegant at all. Carnations should be for a baby shower!

Anyway....why not simply go to a florist? They have books and books for you to look through. That is what we did for both my daughter's wedding and my son's wedding. They can guide you and suggest flowers for you and stay within whatever budget you have! That is their business!!

I would go to a florist. Look through bridal magazines to get ideas too! My suggestion would be a bouquet of red roses for you and ivory for your bridesmaids.....but, again, I love roses...they are elegant and also say "romance"! Another idea for you would be red tulips.

Another suggestion....don't do gerbera daisies...the BIG "daisies" ...they don't do good in bouquets...they wilt easy.

But, again, I would go to a florist. They are more than willing to sit down with you and toss around ideas.

Good luck!
Reply:those are similiar to the colors for my wedding...im gonna have champaigne, black and a deep red...

but for flowers my suggestion is white lillies and deep red roses but since he does not like roses you could go with orchids...thats really pretty or peonies are gorgeous as well!!
Reply:I love tiger lillies, but it's a bit expensive so I am sticking to the traditional roses !
Reply:how about go for tulip...check this website, you might get some ideas for your wedding..http://www.bouquetgarden.com/wedding_flo...
Reply:I'm thinking you might end up choosing roses just because that's where the widest selection is going to be. Check out Black Magic roses-they are so dark red that they appear almost blackish, Fire and Ice roses-white roses with red kissed petals. These are just a few. Speak to your florist and get her/his suggestions before you decide.
Reply:i can NOT believe that that person who claims to be a professional wedding planner said that those colors dont match!!! is she crazy? i mean really.. she DEF needs another job.. i would never hire her! i mean what planet does she live on? red, black, %26amp; white is not something that i would do for my wedding but comeee onnnn.... they are soooo gorgeous together! i just prefer softer colors.. but i think those colors are great together so dont listen to that so called "professional!" as for the flowers.. how about anthuriums?

http://img.alibaba.com/photo/10899846/An...

that would be really different.. with big black leaves http://www.justfruitsandexotics.com/Taro...

(dont know what they're called) surrounding the outside of them... that would really make a statement!
Reply:What about tulips, they come in red, white and black.
Reply:hey congrats !

I think you choose different colors for your wedding

I design the wedding I a professional

for a wedding

the colors just don't match

sorry

congrats again

What kind of flowers could be considered "manly"?

If there is such a thing...

:)

I know flowers in general are considered "feminine"... but lets say I wanted to put flowers in my husband's office. What kind of "manly" flowers should I choose?

Thanks...

T.

What kind of flowers could be considered "manly"?
Hawiian flowers (tropical) are what I have always used in Male Executive offices. Try the link below to get some ideas.
Reply:i think that just a single rose from you to your hubby is a nice wayto say you love him. i gave one to my hubby and it looks very nice on his desk . it is after all the thought that matters every time he looks at it he will think of you
Reply:I'm a man and an avid gardener. I don't know what type of 'office' your husband has or how he would feel about flowers in it and what his clients might say about them.

I've given away willows, daffs, tulips and roses to women.

I've never had a male ask me for some flowers, even when they are free.

Any flowers are fine but if it would make him uncomfortable....don't do it.

Have you ever dated a man who bought you flowers?

Hey, Girls?

Have you ever met a guy who you talked to once a month or seen briefly now and again where he one day bought flowers for you and from there went on a date?

The reason I am asking is; to me it looks like you must buy a women only flowers once you are dating and never before hand.

People say it makes you look desperate and want to bribe the poor women to date you?

I want to take my hairdresser out but she always looks a bit sad and not feeling special and I want to send her flowers with a note that reads something; Special flowers, for a special lady that I hope have a specail day..{myname}

I’ll first find out if she likes flowers and I will ask her what makes her special but I am certain she will say I’m not that special….And this will give me a reason to send her flowers 2 weeks later just because...I'll ask her out later, to show her I am not like all the guys

What are your thoughts on this. Have you ladies ever dated a guy who bought you flowers?

Have you ever dated a man who bought you flowers?
I have received flowers many times, it always made me feel special. Exactly one week from mine and my husbands first date he sent me a dozen pink roses and a teddy bear. He sent me so many gifts all the time, really kept after me and asked me out for each and every date, never assumed and mind you...im not old and neither is he. I am almost 24 and he will be 27 this year. Old fashioned really made a difference though. It let me know that he was always thinking of me and thought a lot OF me at that. It never got old, it says something about a man who takes time to send flowers or gifts. He must really be interested in you as a person. I say it's a go go go all the way! But don't send lily's, those are funeral flowers ;)
Reply:I think its sweet, as long as you don't like stock them and If its sincere and you're not doing it just so you can get in there pants.

Reply:well, i've had a guy give me flowers b4 we were dating (it is a bit weird but i did like it) but if u really wanna make her feel special then think of something original but of course not desperate bcuz flowers are just becoming too ordinary....

I hope this helps
Reply:No. that would be soo sweet though... I wish a guy would do that for me at least once.
Reply:That is so sweet. I don't doubt it would make her day and strongly consider dating you. Showing thoughtfulness, that you recognize she was having a bad day, etc. are the things that make relationships work.
Reply:I never, but I think it's really sweet of you to do that. She'll melt if she got a heart.

Saving flowers.?

I got these flowers today at a funeral. I heard someone saying there is a way to keep flowers forever. What do i do? Instructions please? Someone please help me, this is the only part i have left of my uncle and i want it forever!!!

Saving flowers.?
Roses and baby's breath can be dried as is.

I saved the roses from my mom's casket and I just hung them upside down out of the sunlight and left them there for about 10 days. I put the blooms together and wrapped them with string and tied the string to a coat hanger. Hung it in my dining room. The baby's breath I put in a vase and let it dry. Don't put water in the vase.

Daisies can be pressed. Get a big book and open it to the middle. Lay a sheet of paper towel on the book's page and lay the flowers on top of the paper towel the way you want them to dry ( flatten them out ). Put another sheet of paper towel over them. Close the book and put some other books on top of it. Leave them there for a couple of weeks. They will dry and be pressed. You can put them in a picture frame.

Carnations can be dried but they aren't so pretty. You can hang them, too, or just set them in a vase without water.

You can also preserve flowers using silica gel ( available at craft stores ) but I have not had luck with this method.

Reply:it does depend on the type of flower that u have but if u have a dry dark area try hanging the flower upside down and maybe it will work....certain flowers will not dry but you can have them freeze dried check with your local florist for someone who might do this locally.

Pressing flowers/plants with wax paper...?

Does putting a flower or plant between two pieces of waxed paper and ironing it work?

Also, I'm going on a trip and planning to do this with flowers from there. Is that illegal?

Pressing flowers/plants with wax paper...?
It's best to dry them slowly. I use wax paper between paper towels and a big thick Phone book, it takes about two weeks.

Do men like to receive flowers?

I think giving flowers is really sweet and sentimental, no matter who you give them to. But do guys feel wierd about getting flowers from a girl? I have a crush on a guy and I'm thinking of sending him an "annonymous" bouqet of red roses. Yes, it's cheesy and a bit cliche, but it's a classic token of affection. I just wonder what guys think of getting flowers and if there are any girls who have given a guy flowers.

Thank you.

Do men like to receive flowers?
we like to receive anything. shows you love us.
Reply:don't make it anonymous, and yeah we get to rub it in other guys' faces :D
Reply:Yes yes yes absolutly.Guys love flowers...And yet just the other day one of the guys i work with got sent flowers so happened to be red roses too NOT FOR VALENTINES either..We gave him a bit of stick but we know he loved the gesture and the special attention...
Reply:From my perspective guys usually prefer other things besides flowers. Your gift of a bouquet of roses sounds nice and maybe the guy will like them knowing they are from you. I don't know if he ever received flowers from a female before. I never have. A bottle of wine or a gift to share is my speed. A chance to go somewhere will a pretty lady is more to spend the time with her and keeping those moments special. Best gift I could ever receive, and I would smile. (it wouldn't have to be expensive; I would be very appreciative and content) Classic token of affection isn't ruled out. You wanted to know if men like to receive flowers. I answered you best I could..... No harm either way. My opinion or your choice to give them if you want........
Reply:I think it's a great idea.Men have soft spots in their hearts to.
Reply:not really
Reply:Yeah-even if he'd never admit-it will make him think he is /feel special.
Reply:honestly i would be honored if a girl gave me flowers but none have yet anyway, so yes we do like that stuff.

Is it ok to send flowers to my boyfriend at work for his birthday?

We have been dating for 4 yrs and he's got me flowers twice in that time. He is not a real sensitive guy but I thought it would be a good gesture to send him some flowers on his birthday at work so he realises how it feels. I'm only concerned if he does not feel more embaressed than happy about it.

He works in a small office and is in finance. Everyone there is pretty much suit and tie. Nobody has received flowers at his office so far. I just want to get some advise from other folks because I don't want him to become uncomfortable with the fact that I sent him flowers.

Is it ok to send flowers to my boyfriend at work for his birthday?
Some guys like it but I really don't think I would. He will most likely get teased because that's just what guys do. I mentioned sending my hubby flowers one time and he said that I BETTER NOT! It was funny. Big macho guys can't be getting flowers at work! Haha
Reply:I sent a boyfriend of mine flowers for once at work, but I asked for tiger lilies to be sent, and not roses or anything pink or too pretty. (Some of the more architectural flowers would have been OK too). I also advised the florist carefully as I didn't want twee bows and ribbons all over it either.

Despite him being a lawyer, and working in a really small office with all males except for the receptionist, once he'd got over the initial embarassment, he got quite a bit of respect for it - as did I from his fellow colleagues.

If your boyfriend is a confident guy and settled in at work, you should be OK, but I guess you always take a risk that he will take offence ( %26amp; he'd be daft if he did). However, if he is a sensitive guy, he will probably really enjoy the gesture and appreciate the effort you went to. Good luck with it and I hope he loves receiving them!

I am trying to find some inexpensive wedding flowers. I need them for a Spring wedding, specifically for April 25. I want the flowers for boutonnieres and corsages. Then depending on those will depend on the girls flowers. Any ideas??? I do know that I like the Gerber daisies.. It is a Irish/Scottish wedding with the guys in Kilts. The girls are wearing Peridot, which is a sage green color. Thanks in advance!

Inexpensive Spring Wedding Flowers....?
The gerbera daisies are a great flower. I used them for my wedding. The nice part about those is that you don't need to many flowers to make a bouquet because they are so big.

You can have the guys wear carnation boutonierre's...they are a fairly cheap flower and they look nice as well...

Are the kilts going to be red? Or are they also going to be the color peridot? If they are going to be red, then the red gerbera's are absolutely beautiful.

I am not sure how much it would cost, but they do dye the carnations if you wanted to go for a flower that is a similiar color to the dresses...like these: http://www.amaryllisflowersgiftsandmore....

Or, just stick with a very small gerbera daisy bouquet for the girls...and like I said you only need a few of them....

http://bp1.blogger.com/_XAePxwGya7E/RziT...

You could also use tulips...or a combination of the carnations, tulips and gerbera's.
Reply:Daisys are nice, but I might also suggest a lilly, not all white ones but some with color. They're an awesome spring flower!
Reply:One of my favorites for spring is gerbera daisies. They're quite affordable, and I think you might end up with a nice contrast to the peridot, if you used an orange version (would that clash with the kilts?). Yellow might also work.
Reply:GERBERA ARE REASONABLE AT THE MOMENT ABOUT 60P A STEM, AND YOU CAN MAKE A LOVELY HAND TIED BOQUET WITH THEM AND ROSES AND STATICE AND A BIT OF GREENERY , AND A FEW CARNATIONS , GOOD LUCK
Reply:Someone else in another answer recommended Costco for flowers. I looked into it, because I'd like pretty flowers that won't break the bank, so to speak. They have LOTS to choose from, including spring mixed flowers, which would look nice with the peridot dresses. And the packages are really economical. My fiance's sister-in-law said she had been in Costco and that the flowers were beautiful. Also, she read some report where they said that budget club flowers cost less and lasted longer than expensive florists' flowers for weddings. Best wishes!
Reply:If you order them from sam's club online, they have the cheapest gerbera's anywhere. I was looking at them for m August wedding, but changed my colors. I think they get as low at 40 cents a stem.
Reply:carnations, tulips, gerberas and other daisies

you can even get carnations dyed green for the scotts!!
Reply:Daisies, carnations, tulips and daffodils are all in season during the spring. You could incorporate some shamrocks and some thistle flowers.
Reply:Gerber Daisies, lots of colors cute and cheap.

Which flowers are best for container gardening?

I am looking for plants/flowers that are perennial and have a lovely fragrance/colour. Something hardy that has a decent length of flower (not april to may for example, more like april to september)

Some colour combinations would be great as i really want to make the bed stand out with colour.

Which flowers are best for container gardening?
This is a somewhat difficult question because most perennials simply do not bloom for all that long and most of the ones that do are not particularly fragrant or are rather tall/large for most container plantings. Here are a few suggestions that you may want to check into. I'm in the U.S. but am referring to a couple of U.K. books. I'd still double check if I were you.

Fragrant:

Alstromeria

Freesia (half-hardy, definitely would need winter protection)

Lavender

Nicotiana (also half-hardy)

Santolina

Dianthus (pinks)

Heliotrope

Long bloomers ~ Some may be too large for your purposes.

Tall Garden Phlox (also fragrant)

Coreopsis or Heliopsis

Echinacea

Stella D'Oro and other dwarf daylilies

Winecups (Callirhoe)

Mallow

Russian Sage

Veronica

Campanula

Platycodon

Limonium

Flax

Physostegia

Salvia

Verbena

You may also want to use some perennials with colorful foliage. This is particularly effective if you are willing to use some annuals for bloom color. In fact most containers will be well served by the use of a few annuals.

Foliage:

Artemisia ( many types, silver)

Ligularia (burgundy)

Chocolate eupatorium (brown/black)

Persian shield (purple/silver, half hardy)

Persicaria ( several colors)

Sedum spectabile ( many colors of foliage, all also have lovely flowerheads late in the season)

Heuchera ( many colors)

Hosta lilies also do well in containers and have some lovely foliage but most prefer shade.

I hope this was somewhat helpful to you. I wanted to take on the challenge of your difficult question! I know I have forgotten things that might work but this should give you something to go on, at least I hope so. Good luck and enjoy!

What happens to flowers of chelsea flower show?

Hi

i was wondering what will happen to all the flowers after the chelsea flower show. will they get sold, dumped, stored for next year etc? maybe they are dead anyway after that specacle ;-)

any ideas?

What happens to flowers of chelsea flower show?
They sell them on the last day but you need to get in the queue early to get anything decent. They do at most flower shows
Reply:most get sold, some are donated to hospitals etc and the rest get taken home so that growers can get more cuttings from them.
Reply:they send them to the Chelsea football team to try and cheer them up...lol....

Can leaving Roses and other flowers in 15 degree weather?

I want to leave a bunch of flowers outside my girls door one night so she will get them when she wakes up. I am leaving for the army soon so I need to do it soon. It is getting down to about 15-20 degrees F at night. Will anything bad happen to the flowers in this cold?

I can put a hand warmer pack in the water to keep it warm if that would help.

Any other advice?

What flowers go together really good? What is your favorite kind of flower?

Can leaving Roses and other flowers in 15 degree weather?
It would be best if you left them on her doorstep in a box rather than a vase of water. The hand warmer could get the water too hot and kill the flowers before she can see them. A flower box will give them shelter and keep any frost off of them. When it gets to freezing and my plants can't take those temps, I just cover them in a towel or cotton sheet to keep the heat down on them and prevent frost from killing them. I love yellow, white and red roses, lillies, tulips, irises, orchids, snapdragons or a combination of any or all of them. They go great together.

Do flowers left overnight inside a car die ?

I bought some flowers for valentines, but since they are a lot i decided to let them in the car 'till tomorrow. my question is : will the flowers die or will they survive for valentines ??

Do flowers left overnight inside a car die ?
Bring them in and put them in the fridge! That is if you can fit them, but you should really make some room. They won't die but they might wilt a little (not good!). Especially if it's hot outside or really cold (freezing), any extremes of weather kill flowers. If you didn't ever notice in a flower boutique they have cold cases like a fridge where they keep their flowers, it keeps them fresh longer.
Reply:If its cold out they should be ok! because florist keep there's in a refrigerator anyway!!
Reply:hows the temperature. cold? then maybe yes.
Reply:they are better off to be in the refridgerator.
Reply:It depends. It is best to give them water, but if you live in a cold region, it may be good for the flowers because they will chilled, however if it is too cold they will freeze and die. So... not knowing where you live, it is a toss up.
Reply:give them toher tonight, they will wilt and die probably and then you will be stuck with a bouquet of dead crappy flowers
Reply:What's the weather like? If it's hot they're gonna wilt.

At the very least, make sure they're in water!
Reply:just like you, me and everything, the flowers are already dead. Its just waiting for the evil trickery of time to reveal the decay.

but if your worried about the flowers getting melted by the sun or something...thats a concern for tommorrow, unless you live in the EU in which case it is tommorrow...

some plants only bloom once during the season , mostly annuals

Help drawing foliage, (flowers and trees realistically, especially)?

I've been drawing for a bit, but one thing that I'd really like to learn how to draw, would be trees and flowers. I'm really bad at it in my opinions, but I'd like to get better. So what I'm really looking for is a guide, that could help step by step to help in drawing flowers, trees, and other foliage. One tree I'd like to draw would be a blossom tree, so if the guide has that as the subject it'd be awesome, i really need help with giving detail to the flowers, and tree itself. Which is something i can't do at the moment. If you could help it'd be greatly appreciated. Here are some pictures of what i'd like to be able to draw FREEHAND:

Whether you draw a blossom or a tin can its all the same process...pick up a pencil and draw. There are many books on drawing available, and on-line tutorials...but nothing takes the place of daily exercising your skill with a pencil...you will get better the more you draw. You biggest obstacle to success it you telling you "I can't"...yes you can...and even better tomorrow.

*Guys* Flowers for birthdays? Hell yes? Hell No?

So i have a guy friend, key word [FRIEND], and he lives about 3 hours away from me and i'm not going to be able to see him for his birthday. So i was just thinking, should i maybe send some flowers, so when he gets home they're like on his doorstep and he wouldn't be expecting them..

Or do guys go.. arghh nooo!!! flowers lol.?

I mean if he lived near me, i would give him something awesome, but i won't be seeing him for about a month. and just wanted to get him something for the actual day, rather than a phone call?

Thanks!

*Guys* Flowers for birthdays? Hell yes? Hell No?
You'd be surprised how much a phone call can mean to a guy on his birthday. Try calling him and wishing him a happy birthday and ask him about how his day has been so far and what his plans are. If you really want to send a gift, send him a nice card. Flowers are reserved for more intimate situations.

Want to find seeds in flowers and plants?
My wonderful answer just got wiped out somehow, so I am just going to give you a link to a good website. Be sure to read the facts and tips on the page, too. And I would forget about getting seeds from vegetables (just buy new seeds from a good source). The marigolds and herbs may be easier.
Reply:Reasonable question for a newbie.

Flowers turn into seeds, period.

Some plants have seed pods, this is the tomato you eat or the cucumber. Some of these seed pods you do not eat, such as some of plants we have for flowers.

Lillies, iris and the such are usually propagated by the roots.

I have been separating last years seeds, and seed pods. Here is a pic (if it comes through) the flower pod to the left is a flower that is done blooming, leaving this will produce nice seeds which I am sure is in my seeds dried and ready for planting this year....

Increasing flowers on Baptisia australis?

I have a 2+ yr old plant that gave me about 3 stalks of flowers last summer. I know it takes a few years for these perennials to mature, but I wonder if there's something I can do in the way of pruning, fertilizing, watering, etc. to increase the amount of flowers I get per stalk, and stalks per plant.

I love my false indigo and want more of it!

What kind of flowers are these?

Do you know what kind of flowers these are? Both of purple flowers and the white flowers. Thank you!!!

My sincerest apologies for the cheesy fading pictures. I couldn't find a better place to post the images. I think Yahoo should put a place to upload pictures when you ask questions...

http://img297.imageshack.us/slideshow/pl...

What kind of flowers are these?
A shot of the leaves would really help identify both of these flowers.

I think the purple flowers are Dames Rocket (Hesperis matronalis L.). Someone else suggested Garden Phlox, but the stamens in Phlox are not yellow/green.

The white flowers looks a bit like a snapdragon. Without seeing the back of the flower, and the size of the flower it's hard to tell.
Reply:The purple one looks just like Erysimum 'Bowles Mauve' (wallflower) to me:

http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/im...

The white one looks like Nemesia fruticans (a white form) or a new hybrid Nemesia, it's a little hard to tell from the picture but I'm pretty certain:

http://www.naturehills.com/product/compa...

Hope this helps.

EDIT: I agree with sailinshoes, it's hard to identify for certain without seeing the leaves. Hesperis and Snapdragon are good calls too.

I still do think that the purple one is Erysimum and not Hesperis because of 2 things: 1) Erysimum flowers up the stalk and once the flowers are spent, they drop and leave the tiny stem as is evident in your photo, 2) Erysimum has a yellow center and Hesperis does not.

In regards to the white one, I did ponder snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) too-which it could very well be. I went with Nemesia because in the photo it looks like the flowers are more clustered and that is reminiscent of Nemesia. Snapdragons flower on a stalk.

Again, this is just my opinion. Seeing the foliage, more of the flower and measurement of the flower would help a lot. At any rate, you have some good answers to investigate further.

Ordering flowers from FTD, is it a scam?

has anybody had a bad experience with FTD..do they really mail the flowers on time like they say? i read on here that FTD stands for "forget to deliver".

is ftd a scam or a legit flower company?

Ordering flowers from FTD, is it a scam?
Forget FTD and all the other on line flower people like Teleflora and others. They are generally NOT reliable! If you wish to send flowers, go to or call a local florist who can take your order and contact a florist in the town where the delivery will be made. This is the safest most reliable way.
Reply:I've ordered flowers from FTD after looking at the various pics of arrangements they have. The flowers that show up are often of poor quality for some reason. So I gave up on FTD and now just Google a florist in the town where I want them sent and order that way. I have even called the florist, told them to look at a pic of a bouquet on FTD's website, and they have made it perfectly!

So my advice, don't do FTD. Go to a local. You'll get a better deal. Just google florist and whatever town they are supposed to go.
Reply:FTD is legit but they're not very reliable. I've heard several accounts of how they don't deliver.

A co-worker of mine got flowers for Valentine's Day from her boyfriend about 2-3 weeks before the actual date!!! And a friend of mine paid extra $ to ensure delivery on Valentine's Day %26amp; they didn't deliver the flowers until the following day.

Don't order from FTD!
Reply:They are legit. I've used FTD florists many times.
Reply:FTD is a national association of florists. You order the flowers in your town. Your local florist picks up the phone and call the city where you want the flowers delivered. In that city a florist makes up the boquet and delivers it. They pay a fee to FTD from the amount you pay.

The only problem I have heard of is sometimes the quality of flowers at the recipient florist are not as good as advertised. If you are really leary get the reciever to photograph the boquet and send you the pic.

Lasting Flowers?

I received some flowers and I was wondering what I could do that would make them last longer. They are really pretty and I would love to make them last. For some reason my flowers always die really fast. Does anyone know any tricks to make them last longer so they don't wilt?

Lasting Flowers?
Change the water every 3-4 days and make sure it is lukewarm.

Aspirin works good when dissolved in water for roses. It preserves the flower beautifully.

Plant food for fresh cut flowers can be poured into the water and preserve the life of your flowers. You can purchase it at almost every home and garden store.

Keep your flowers in a sunny area and remove any dead leaves and buds. Also, make sure you remove the leaves from the stem of the flower that will be submerged under water. This will ensure the water doesn't get contaminated!

Good luck!
Reply:The first step to fresh-looking flowers is stripping all leaves from stems that will be below the water line. Submerged foliage encourages bacteria growth in the container water. Remove at least 1 inch from the bottom of any flower stems that have been exposed to air. Legends abound as to the best way to cut, slice, or crush stems before placing them in water. Cutting stems at a 45-degree angle really does help most flowers absorb water. Some woody stemmed flowers benefit from slicing their stems, but you can’t go wrong with a diagonal cut. Use garden shears or a sharp knife to cut stems. Common household scissors can crush the vascular systems of the flower stem, inhibiting water uptake. As soon as you make the cut, plunge flowers into a vase or container filled with lukewarm water.
Reply:Yes change to wider every 2-3 days and add an aspirin. This is the trick.

Find a florist nearest to her job and have them deliver it.

As to your question, just go to any florist in your area that delivers. Tell them your needs and usually the personal touch works. Of course, you might be too late to illicit the promise for Valentines day. In that case, buy the flowers and have one of your friends deliver them or deliver them to her job yourself. She will be impressed and it will give the right message to her co-workers.

Ordering flowers in bulk for a wedding?

I am trying to think of ways to cut down the cost of my wedding. I have some very talented people in my family who could put together some wonderful arrangements- so I'm thinking of ordering flowers in bulk and doing it ourselves. Has anyone ever done this? How did it turn out and where did you order from? About how much did it cost? I don't want crappy looking flowers! THANKS!

Ordering flowers in bulk for a wedding?
That is exactly what I did. I ordered from The Flower Exchange. I got 200 tulips and five bunches of pittsporum for around $220. My only problem was that my red tulips opened up too quickly but they were still amazing. I got all the materials to make bouttonnieres and corsages at Hobby Lobby and a friend of mine put them all together. It was far less expensive to do it that way. Of course, she was busy busy the day before the wedding but she wanted to do it for us. It is very time consuming but a LOT less expensive.

Good luck and congratulations!

If you haven't ordered invitations yet, look into www.lcipaper.com. We ordered ours there and just printed them ourselves. They looked great and were cheap.

Good luck and congratulations!
Reply:I know places like cost-co and sam's club sell flowers in bulk. We're looking to get a bunch of hydrangias from them and just aranging them in vases ourselves and then going to a florist for the actual hand-held arangments (except for my throwing bouqet, that will be wholesale flowers as well. No use play $30 for a small arrangment your throwing and will probably be shredded to piece by bachlorettes anyways).
Reply:Our florist did that for one of my daughters weddings. We wanted calla lillies and it was much cheaper to order in bulk. The other flowers were used elsewhere and it was great. Saved tons of money.
Reply:I am ordering mine from growersbox.com. I am getting about 250 roses for $200. This site was recommended by my photographer.

Congrats and Good luck to you!
Reply:Any decent nursery will be able to take and process your request.

Look at the quality of fresh cut flowers they sell, this is the same quality you'll get, because most of the time they'll order their flowers from the same location.
Reply:WE ORDERED BULK FROM WALMART AND DID THEM OUR SELFS WE SAVED ABOUT 70%DOING THIS
Reply:Try one of these two sites.
Reply:We ordered our flowers from Sam's and had a friend of the family do the arrangements. We had 22 table arrangements,8 bouquets, 17 boutonnieres, and 2 huge altar arrangements. The total was around $700...that included paying our friend to make all the arrangements! It turned out beautiful and what would have costs several thousand to do!
Reply:I am doing the same thing so I will be ordering mine from http://www.growersbox.com/. The have "wedding in-a-box options and if any of those work for you you would save even more money. They are straight from the flower farms so they are super fresh so they will last all day!! Plus free shipping!! Well good luck to you, and if you end up using this site please let me know it worked for you! Have a great day!!
Reply:Unless the talented people in your family are up for a lot of work and willing to be totally busy the day of the wedding, then I would not attempt this.

I understand wanting to save money, but if you want things to be fairly elaborate and/or are fairly picky, then I would just go with a professional and realize that part of the extra expense is the value of knowing it is being handled by someone who does this every weekend and it will look the way you want it to.
Reply:I am doing the same thing. I have not chosen which company I'm going through yet (I'm still in the early planning stages) but I did order a sample from rosesource.com. You get to pick up to 8 varieties of roses you want in the pack to make up 24. (Some companies will only send out a variety sample pack so you don't know which kinds will be in there) These are all the sites that I've looked at. If you have any questions about them just email me. I know A LOT about bulk flowers.

For flowers, what is your favourite bloom season? Why?

What is is your favourite bloom season for your flowers? I love the summer blooms. Believe it or not, but, I have NO Spring flower blooms (oither than my lilac two apple trees), I don't like the Spring blooms because Spring isn't when I have the time enjoy it and really work hard on it. I like Summer blooms I have so much time (and saved money) to plant everything. What is your favourite bloom season, any why? You can only pick one season.

For flowers, what is your favourite bloom season? Why?
Spring for me is the best. I hate the winter and like to greet spring with dozens of tulips lined up and down my drive way and walkway. I add fresh dark mulch to the garden bed -wh , for a striking contrast against the bold tulips, ...I then add several more tulips on my front steps potted in containers.

I usually spend about 300 bucks on this alone, every spring, but it looks so good I don't mind.
Reply:Summer is my favorite time because everything is in bloom and even the trees are thick with green leaves.

BUT the honeysuckle and wisterias only blooms in spring. I like these too.

In my Science class, we are having a test on the flowering reproduction system. I need to know the following:

~Examples of Vascular and Non-Vascular Plants

~What Tropisms are

~How a plant can reproduce without spores or seeds

~Reproductive structures in a Gymnosperm, Moss, and Fern

~Function of Flowers

~Description of pollination

~What happens to the ovary of a flower

Need help with flowers for Quiz!!??
My suggestion is to take your imperative words and look them up in the dictionary and thesaurus. once you have done that, ask a question on google or yahoo about how to reproduce flowers. Roots produce roots, therefore there are no seeds. Annuals and weeds produce seeds as they mature like sunflowers, etc. Or call a gardening shop and ask their expert advice. Go to a gardening shop, they'll have one-on-one help for you and they have books and references to help you.
Reply:Try reading your science book!

Should I buy flowers for wedding if I already have sent a present ?

If I have already purchased a present for a friend's wedding via the wedding registry, should I also get the flowers?

I read somewhere that it's not appropriate to give flowers (especially at the church) since it may be not convenient for the bride and the groom to transport the flowers from the church.

But somehow it feels weird to come to a wedding with empty hands, even if the present was already sent to the newlyweds....

Should I buy flowers for wedding if I already have sent a present ?
In todays society, wedding eddiquete is not so black and white.

Who pays for what, the format of the wedding, the gift registry - its all changing. It is an indivual choice either for the bride and groom or the guests.

At the end of the day, it is your choice. If you would feel more comfortable to buy flowers as well, do so. If you feel like the bride and groom are not fussy in that respect, then dont worry, save the money and worry.

Try to interpret how the bride and groom feel. They have set up a registry so that suggests that they have particular things they would prefer and dont really want lots of random gifts. So they probably wont worry about not receiving flowers on the day - as you said it may be inconvenient to handle. Specially if the flowers might stain the dress.

Why dont you go for one of those cards that dangle from ribbon that you slip on the wrist of the bride? They dont have to worry about it then as it just wraps around the wrist and wont get in the way? Plus that way you can write a little note on it for keepsake.

Do what is most comfortable to you, but remember times are changing and everyone seems to take tradition vs modern very different.
Reply:No need to bring flowers if you have already sent the gift.
Reply:If you feel weird going empty handed take a card. You have already sent the gift.
Reply:It's not necessary. Flowers are ready purchased for the wedding. If you have sent a present already then it is ok to come empty handed.
Reply:just bring a card
Reply:I think you should just bring a card, maybe you can put a poem inside or something, but you've already sent a gift, so you're all set! Most people do the same, so there is no need for flowers. The couple may be so involved in getting settled into their home and figuring out what to do with all their gifts and packing that they may not have time to appreciate flowers, although they are a beautiful gesture!

Just hold your handbag in one hand and a cocktail in another... you won't be empty-handed then! :)
Reply:NO YOU DON'T HAVE TO . BUT IF YOU FEEL LIKE IT, GO AHEAD. A WEDDING CAN NEVER HAVE TO MANY FLOWERS ! MAY BE IN A BASKET , IT'S EASIER TO CARRY.
Reply:Yaoflowers.com,One of the best China online florists, is based on China mainland and have flower chain stores in most cities of china. We offer professional and faithful China flowers delivery and China gifts service in China. Yaoflowers delivery center can offer many kinds of China flowers, such as roses flower, lily, cream cake in Saint Valentine's Day, Christmas, Spring Festival (Chinese new year ), mother day, father day, mid-autumn festival, etc.

Reply:If you feel truly out of place coming empty handed bring a really nice card. No one will know if there is a cash gift in there and you can feel like you have something to leave on the gift table.

Save the flowers for their first born child!
Reply:As the mother of the bride last month, I beg you, go to the wedding empty handed. It is the family of the bride/groom who have to load everything brought to the wedding in their vehicles and get them to the home of the new couple, who may be on their honeymoon for a week or two. You sent a gift ahead of time (bless you), and nothing else but your presence at their special day is necessary!

Colourful flowers?

I have just recently started redoing my garden, the only problem is that I need much more colour, would anyone know some names of colourful flowers. I live in Zambia so it is quite hot the only coldish months are may June July August.

I need flowers for Full Sun, No Sun and some in between.

Colourful flowers?
Sun lovers: Zinnia, Portulaca, Marygolds, snap dragons, pansys dalias, peonys, cinneraria, flox, cosmos, ageritum, petunia, corral bells, ajuga, coreopsis, aszania, hollyhock, Queen Ann's Lace, yarrow,

Sorry, couldn't think of any more (2:30 AM)
Reply:Although most flowers say you can plant them in full sun, all flowers do much better in partical sun. I find that Petunias are very colorful and hardy. Geranimums are also. If you like yellow and orange, Marigolds are also very hardy and colorful. Another favorite of mine is Snapdragon. They are extremely hardly. I once had some blooming in January and that's when it's cold and snowy where I live.
Reply:If you can get some zinnia and cosmos seeds, I think you will be pleased.
Reply:try lilies....Asiatic and oriental and even day lilies do well in full sun, but they like their roots in shady cooler soil...."heads in the sun, feet in the shade" which you can achieve by planting lots of them so they shade the soil they are planted in. Try bulbs also, tulips are great as are gladiolus....they bloom with full color before it gets too hot. Also, do not forget that lots of color comes from the leaves of plants. Try coleus (there is a sun coleus that may wilt a little, but when watered perks right up), purple shield and Vinca (periwinkle) love it when it's hot. Dont rule out purple fountain grass. Many grasses are drought tolerant and provide really nice color and nice plumage for the winter months.....good luck.
Reply:Hi

I am not sure what kind of seeds are available in Zambia ..... but Impatiens are lovely, not fussy, and come in nice pinks, pale and dark oranges, and white ...

Just find yourself a seed company that is willing to send you a catalogue, and browse to your heart's content!

I have received flowers from my kids but they didn't offered them from their heart Should I be upset?

My daughters have 17 and 18 years old. yesterday it was Mother's Day and they gave me flowers, as traditionally. However, they were nervous and I felt that they weren't happy to offer me something. My elder girl's boyfriend, who lives in my house and I consider him as my son, also bought some flowers but he didn't offer them. I found them on a table and the girls told me that they are from him. I have explained them that when you give flowers you have to do it with all your heart and my girl said no, it was enough that they bought them. I was upset and I thought that the life of a mother is very hard you have to do everything and to not wait for love. What do you think?

I have received flowers from my kids but they didn't offered them from their heart Should I be upset?
They bought you your flowers.. what were you expecting, a parade in your honor? How exactly does one give flowers "with all their heart"? If they're nervous about giving their mother flowers on mothers day, then there's probably areason for it. Maybe their mothers ridiculous expectations.
Reply:My heart goes out to you. You are not doing anything wrong. Your children are like some other children who go through a stage where they dislike parents for no reason at all. I mean this sincerly, the only thing you can do is put them in God's hands. So many people tried to tell me how to raise my children. I did not listen to them and thank God that I didn't. Hard as it is, you just have to have faith.

My children were in their late 20s when they started showing more love for me. They still cannot tell me that they love me. That is ok. Actions speak louder than words is what they tell me. Good luck and don't give up.
Reply:I think you're a bit self absorbed and that your daughters are too.
Reply:Do not forget they are still teenagers. You know , they feel embarassed to show their feeling for their "old" parents. And your daughter's boyfriend may have the same problem, maybe he is a little shy. My fiance behaves almost the same with me and with his mother, even if i know for sure he loves me and his mother too. So , don't worry, maybe it is hard for them to express their feelings, maybe they feel only embarassed, but i am sure they love you
Reply:I think that the best way to not worry about something like this is to get out and do something nice for someone. Your email comes across a bit like you are being a martyr.

Yes, we do a lot of things for our kids, and yes, it's hard work. That's part of being a mother. You don't constantly remind your kids of how much you have done for them and how ungrateful they are. That's a good way to make them feel resentful.

So, my suggestion for you is to develop a life outside your kids. They are almost (if not already) grown. You've raised them. Now go do some things that you would like to do. Take a class. Get a degree. Volunteer. Get a part time job. Just do something you have always wanted to do with your life. Don't focus so much on your kids and how ungrateful they are. If you set an example for them as an indepentent, courageous woman who is interesting and intelligent, they will respond accordingly.

You only have one life to live. It sounds like you've spent most of it doing things for others. It's your turn now.
Reply:It shows only one thing and that is : They are scared of you. They don't know when you will lose your temper. Believe it or not. They love you. But they felt afraid that you would not like it. Show your love. Appreciate the fact that they took out the time to bring you flowers. If they wanted to, they would have ignored the Mother's Day. Instead of thanking them graciously, you simply said that they should have done it with their heart. How would you feel if you brought a dress for your daughter and she said the same thing? That is exactly what they felt.
Reply:you need to be grateful that your daughters are there and that they are thinking of you after all they gave you flowers. why is it that someone that has the love of their children still find something to complain about get over yourself and thank god your children are their. some of us don't have that luxury,we don't even get a hello, because they get taken away too early

I'm doing my own flowers, need advice...?

We are on a strict budget for our wedding and based on the quotes I've been told, we can't afford a florist. A friend of my Mother told us that we should buy real flowers in bulk online and just do the arrangements ourselves. (that's what they did at her daughters wedding) I love the idea, especially since we aren't doing that many decorations. My fiancee is afraid real flowers will be too much work since we have to care for them overnight. My question is, for those who did their own flowers, how do I know how much to order? Whether I go with silk or real I don't want to overbuy. I do have a floral book that I'm getting ideas from. Also, If it ends up being easier can I mixed silk flowers with real, or is that tacky? The bouquets and stuff will be real. Any advice would be a great help!

I'm doing my own flowers, need advice...?
I only wish I had $5000 to spend on MY wedding! I'm planning an outdoor wedding for May '07 and have done all my own florals with silks. I wouldn't mix fresh and silks either. Doing your own isn't that hard and will save you alot in the end. I bought my silks from several different places, Hobby Lobby, Michael's, Dollar General and Dollar Tree. Hobby Lobby will usually have their stems on sale one week and their bunches on sale the next, both at half price. They have some beautiful silks to choose from. If you choose to buy on an off week then they always have a coupon you can use to save 40%. I bought my bouquet holder from Hobby Lobby on a week when they had all their wedding stuff for half off. Choose whatever florals you want to use and all you have to do is cut them and begin placing them in the styrofoam holder, then when you're satisfied with the look, finish it off by wrapping coordinating ribbons around the handle and then looping them thru the hole on the end to have some hanging off. You can go to multiple websites online and print off step by step directions on how to do your own, just do a search on how to.

I also made all the corsages and boutineers too, plus decorations to use thruout the wedding. I'm also decorating an arbor with tulle, red heart lights and silk garlands that will coordinate with my bridal flowers.

If I can do it, anyone can! Just have a hot glue gun, wire cutters, some wire, floral tape and a little confidence in yourself!!

Best wishes for beautiful flowers and a happy life!
Reply:I am not sure what your budget is (I have worked with very small before though) there are a few good options for silks. Dont do real because to keep them from wilting you should refrigerate them overnight and that could take alot of room up in your fridge.

Silks have come a LONG way since their conception, and you can get silks now that are almost impossible to tell from the real thing. Just be sure you get good quality.

I know a few silk florists (online) that work with budgets. If you would like their info email me.

EDIT: You can get good quality silks for less than 300, email me and I will help you cut costs if you like (For FREE). You can have a GREAT wedding on a $5000 budget (or less!)
Reply:If there is anyway you can squeeze any money out of your budget for at least your bouquet, I would highly recommend it. You say you have a book you are looking at, then look at the arm bouquets for your attendants. These would be the easiest for a novice. You really should have a florist do these also. You could choose rather inexpensive flowers, with a flashy bow with streamers. The boutonnieres and corsages you could do in silk, in advance. Check with the church about altar flowers. Some require them. I wish I had more time to help you out more,
Reply:If you have never done flower work before it isnt as easy as it looks.

Silk flowers are tacky , in my opinion for a wedding.

If you are really on a tight budget my suggestion is this. For your Bridal bouquet have what is known as an arm bouquet.Simply put a few stems of fresh flowers tied with ribbon. They can be kept over night in a vase of water, they dont need to be refridgerated if kept cool.same with your bridesmaids.

Bouts. and coursages have made by a florist. They can be kept in the fridge over night. Limit who gets them.

Buying flowers online that are mailed can be a huge mistake if you have never dealt with the company before.Your flowers may be damaged or your shipment late.

If you have a Costco in your area they sell mixed bouquets of flowers in the store they now also sell wedding packages online. The people that provide this service are usually wholsale growers in your area. Look at their packages online.

You can also pre order flowers from the store in some areas talk to the manager.
Reply:I wouldn't mix real and silk. Not in the same bouquet, at least. You could give your maid/matron of honor a real bouquet, and give the rest of your girls silk, though. As far as overordering, if you find silks online or whatever that you like, buy just one or 2 bushes. Chances are you local WalMart/Hobby Lobby/Michael's has the same thing for half the price. Also, I know that MOST Hobby Lobby stores have someone who designs silk bouquets. Not sure on pricing, but if you have one near you it might be worth the time to check it out. You could also google silk wedding bouquets. Most places where you order the full bouquets you can pick the type/color of flower to be used.
Reply:For decoration I only use artificial flowers, life flowers are only for bouquet boutonniere etc. sometimes people use real flower for centerpieces, which is OK and usually doesn't cost as much. Sure if you can do your own arrangement to look like the ones you see in the magazine, feel free to do so.

Yes my florist did say it is a lot of work to keep your flowers fresh for the event and it will cost you utility bills too I think, because you might not have time to arrange the flowers the day before the wedding right? means you will buy them 2 or 3 days prior then arrange them then store them with the right temperature etc..

Help me find flowers?
Perennial verbena comes in red and white, spreads rapidly and grows to about 3 inches tall. They can take full sun and are very drought tolerant once established - they bloom all summer, die back completely in the winter and return each spring! Good Luck!
Reply:petunias
Reply:For red blooms, try begonias, zinnias, celosia, snapdragons, impatiens, geraniums, salvia, and verbena. White bloomers include many of the same varieties--zinnias, impatiens, geraniums, and begonias, for example--as well as dianthus, phlox, and cosmos. Ageratum and salvia are blue as are a few perennials like delphiniums, morning glories, and bellflowers.

Bachelor buttons come in all three Fourth of July colors and will do well in partial shade to full sun. Petunias, one of the most commonly available annuals, also can be found in red, white, and blue, including bi-colors, although the blue is actually more of a deep purple. They do best in full sun.
