Burned leaves on flowers from watering during the day?

I just recently got flowers from Home Depot and have planted them around my mailbox. They were the kind you get in the black plastic containers that have already begun to grow. I'm not sure what kind of flowers they are off the top of my head but...

I'm pretty sure that I burned the leaves one day (you know when the leaves turn brown and crinkle up a bit) when I watered them while the sun was bright and shinning on them. Now the plant looks very sad...will it bounce back or have I just murdered my flower?

Burned leaves on flowers from watering during the day?
The leaves that have died will not bounce back. It would be best to pluck them and water the plant in the morning or at dusk...Your plant should start to grow more leaves and soon flowers. Hopefully this was helpful and good luck.

Why breeding strains of sweet peas having white flowers crossed?

#1) A white-flowered iris was crossed with a red-flowered iris. Both were true-breeding. The F1 progeny were all red. The F2 progeny were 145 red and 15 white. Suggest a genetic explanation and test it with a X2 test.

#2) Two true breeding strains of sweet peas having white flowers were crossed. All F1s had purple flowers. When the F1s were self-crossed, the F2 generation progeny were 875 with purple flowers and 725 with white flowers.

Bridal and Bridesmaids flowers?

What kinds of flowers should we use? I want my flowers to be all white, probably calla lilies, but I'm at a loss for the bridesmaids. I want hot pink and lime green. I'm thinking of yoko onos for the green accent but what flower should we use for the hot pink? and what would look good with my white calla lilies? Any ideas for the groom, groomsmen and moms and dads? Thanks.

Bridal and Bridesmaids flowers?
What about the Gerbera Daisies? They are a beautiful, as well as affordable, flower. You could also use tulips or hot pink roses. There are a lot of options... Here are some pictures for you to look at.

Reply:There are hot pink cala lillies out there. They would look really nice paired with light pink roses and green hydrangea. Lots of texture and color. Good luck!
Reply:Hot pink roses are always a good choice, you can also try hot pink Gerberas.

Wedding Flowers?

2 part question:

I need some ideas for centerpieces for a Christmas themed wedding.. pictures would help.

Also, we are having a small reception in the same place as the rehearsal dinner. Only the wedding party will be at the rehearsal, will it be okay to reuse some of the flowers?

My ceremony flowers will be burgundy calla lillies, it's outside right on the river, so we need very little in the floral arrangements.

Wedding Flowers?
There is no problem using the flowers that you used for the rehearsal. Its a great way to save money!

As far as your Christmas themed wedding, you could put little christmas trees on your tables for center peices and you could also use a really pretty glass bowl and put diffrent colored ornaments in the bowl. Or nice candles which make it really elegant and cozy!

and they make favors where you personalize little pine trees as favors and gifts for your guests. its a really cute idea.
Reply:I think it would be good to use Holly and mistletoe in your arrangements. Also, maybe use poinsettas as centerpieces at your reception, they're inexpensive and very christmasey!

Incorporate some red and white ribbons in with your boquets as well... and maybe a little string of faux pearl beads so they look like they reflect the idea of garland around a tree.

Good luck, sounds like it will be an interesting wedding!!
Reply:I went to two weddings last year in December and one wedding that I thought that had the best flowers had cranberries in the centerpieces.

It was a bowl in the middle of the table with a floating bouquet in it with small poinsettias, green leaves and tiny cranberries floating in the water.
Reply:Something like this seems perfect...

http://www.flowersallover.com/images/ftd...

It is pretty and goes right along with your theim...

It you want to stick with the cala lilies than something like this would work..... the round vase with a mini wreath around it

http://www.poorhubby.com/images/callalil...
Reply:Maybe you could make little tree center pieces. That would be cute. Hang little wedding ornaments on them. :) Yes, re-use whatever you can!! No one will notice and if they do, they won't know they are re-used, they will think it's all themed and matched together!
Reply:What about a large glass bowl filled with xmas ornaments in your colors? Surround it with a few votives and at the end of the night everyone could take one home as a favor.

"Survivor" Flowers???

I live in Lake Havasu City, Az. Here's the climate for an idea:

-The soil is desert and sandy/beachy with little nutrients

(although I could fix this with potting soil)

-It's always very windy

-The summer's get up to 120 degrees farenheit. NO LIE

So I have a cute little section in front of my house where I'd like to get rid of the rock and plant some flowers/foliage. Any idea of some tough plants/flowers that are inexpensive to seed or plant that might survive a summer here??? Water bill is not a big deal at all and time and effort aren't either... Just something that won't die if I don't water it for a day maybe?

"Survivor" Flowers???
I don't have any plant recommendations, but I do know of a soil amnedment that would be great for your area. It is called Pozzolan and it is an all natural volcanic diatomaceous soil amendment that will absorb and hold water at the root level and then release the stored moisture back to the plants as needed. It will also hold nutrients and fertilizer in the soil longer, keeping it available to the plant rather than letting it wash away. It is rich in minerals too.

Pozzolan will also greatly improve the sandy soils ability to hold water. It is being used extensively in the Middle East to grow grass in the desert for golf courses.
Reply:Cacti?
Reply:sedum, hen and chicks, maybe bearded iris
Reply:I would like to know if it is full sun , partial sun .and depending on morning sun or afternoon sun.lots of things will grow in the summer heat. more information please.I can give you some but if you want a better selection fit for spot .I have hibiscus, pine, vinca, verbena, lantana, rose
Reply:I would try Autumn Joy sedum they are very hardy and forgiving plant hope this helps.

Fake Flowers?

Can anyone recommend a good glue to attach fake flowers (thistles) to thin card and then a ribbon to the flower and card?

Fake Flowers?
PVA glue would possibly be the best, You can buy at craft stores

Ya you could use tape but you would see that
Reply:http://search.ebay.co.uk/glue

there are loads of glues here you would find them in craft shops

What flowers go with this bridemaid dresses pics included?
Take it from a gay guy with superb taste ... both are very good choices, but I lean towards the blue hydrangia and white gerberas. The perfect arrangement in my view, if the hydrangias were a bright lilac or lavender color - the color would "pop" even more! Yes they do come in that color - I think the sky blue is just a little too "cool". What is your bouquet like? Shouldn't the bridesmaid's flowers complement - and I don't mean match! -the bride's?

Good luck!
Reply:I would try some more fallish colors like these!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/jellybeanji...

http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/vi...

Sorry the last one is so long!
Reply:I don't like the yellow or peach gerber daisies with that color dress, it's like champagne. I like the color contrast of the blue hydrangeas but everyone uses those for weddings. I would go for a deeper red or burgundy for the daisies with the blue and champagne dresses.
Reply:Nice. My girls are wearing the same dresses except for the dress will be chocolate brown and the sash will be in taupe.

We are going with orange roses. You need some color since the dress is a neutral color
Reply:IMO you should go with the coral daisies. I thnk the color goes with the bridesmaid dresses better than the yellow and blue.
Reply:I think pinks would look excellent with those dresses. Everyone likes pink and brown. The first gerbs are prettier because they have more color. You could even add a hot pink gerb to the mix. Good luck.
Reply:I would go with the cream gerber. Cream goes with everything and with that color dress it would look really elegant.
Reply:I would recommend creams, whites or pinks as it goes great with the colours. To get an idea of how these flowers would look, you could visit this link here: http://www.arenaflowers.com/weddings/wed...
Reply:I love the third option (the cream colored gerber). That would be very pretty with those dresses.
Reply:I like both of the color gerber daisies.

I think they would look beautiful.
Reply:The first one - but something even more colorful would be much better
Reply:the blue yellow would not go with a pink dress but the diasy looking one will.
Reply:I like the white/blue ones best.
Reply:I like the second colour, classier!
Reply:go for something in a pale pink.
Reply:no, that color is to peach. i'd go with a color that was more light pinkish and a pale yellow
Reply:Stick to the first bouquet. Very nice!
Reply:I'm sorry but I don't like either. Put some color into it.

What Flowers are in season in May?

I am getting married in Indiana May 2009. What times of flowers are locally in season? Especially vibrant colored flowers.

What Flowers are in season in May?
Wow! First of all, I wish you the best of luck! Secondly, might I say that I, too, was married in May ... in Indiana! I would love to know where you are getting married! I would love to know what bouquet you decide on once you decide! Flowers are so much fun and such a part of any wedding! Anyway, I used tulips at my wedding and they turned out beautifully. I am particularly fond of tulips anyway and found a florist that was, too! They last quite a bit longer than other flowers (especially if you take proper care of the bouquet after your wedding) and the color options are honestly endless. There are several variations of tulips, too. A lot of people are not aware of this. The petals differ, the flowers have different textures, different shapes on the petals ...

Gerber daisies are very hardy and come in many brilliant colors. They come in all different sizes so you could use them as the main flower in your bouquet or as an accent or filler flower. I love gerber daisies!

You will find that tulips and irises work fabulously together. They are both extremely vibrant in color and compliment one another with their textures.

Lillies work fabulously, too. There are not as many color options but they are vibrant and extremely hardy. And they add a certain touch of class or elegance to bouquets.

A beautiful bouquet you could use would include hyacinths, freesia, and tulips. Another would be roses, parrot tulips, and hypericum. Roses, tulips, and cala lillies make a gorgeous statement.

The first link I have included just shows you all the different varieties of tulips available. The second one will show you different bouquet options using the flowers I have suggested. I have also tried to include as many of the flowers I can think of in a list along with the colors they come in.

*Tulips - Too many colors and types to even list! There are regular tulips, tulips with fringed petals, lilly-flowered tulips, darwin hybrid tulips (the colors are intense and deep!), parrot tulips, rembrandt tulips, viridiflora tulips, double late tulips, fosteriana tulips, grieggi tulips ... and the choices of color and texture are both endless

Spring Wedding Flowers in Season:

Anemone - Blue, red, pink, white

Bells of Ireland - Green

Boronia - Pink

Casa Blanca Lily - White

Daffodil - Yellow/ White

Delphinium - White, Blue

Hyacinth - Purple, Pink, Yellow, Darker Shade that appears to be "blue", Red, or White (and they smell fabulous!)

Lilacs - Violet or White

Narcissus - White

Peony - Pink or White

Ranunculus - White, Pink, Red, Orange and Yellow

Star Gazer Lily - Pink, Red, Maroon, Yellow, Orange, and White

Sweetpea - White, Pink, Red, Coral, and Lavender/Purple

Waxflower - Pink, Purple and White
Reply:May is a great time of year for flowers as there is a huge variety available and very few things that you can't get. Please tell me your wedding is not mothers day weekend though, as you are going to encounter some serious floral problems if so. Mother's day is the busiest week of the year for us and most florists either will not book a wedding for that weekend or will only do minimal items. Contact some local florists and ask some basics, though most will likely not need to formally take the order until early in 2009. I may be able to help you with finding a florist if you would like to email me. Good luck!

Looking for colorful flowers that will stay in bloom spring through fall and only require morning sun?

My cat loved to walk through the flowers in our garden and smell them. She is now buried between 2 pine trees in our yard. The area only receives sun morning to just before noon. I would like to plant colorful flowers on her grave that will bloom from spring to first frost. Can you suggest some flowers that I might plant there?

Dahlias are great. They come back year after year and they'll bloom all summer. Take a closer look at some of the pics.

Reply:Impatiens would do well, as would begonias. Plant a few ferns and hostas as well.
Reply:Coriopsis is the one of the best plants I know of for what you are looking for. This bushy plant is valued for its long blooming period and they are drought-tolerant. I has small daisy like flowers and require little care.
Reply:marigolds, cosmos,geraniums
Reply:I would plant some bright Impatiens. They like a little sun,but do need plenty of water. I use to have a cat (Felicia)that would walk through my Impatien and Hosta garden and smell them, and I didn't think they had a very strong smell, but a cats sense of smell must be much stronger. Impatiens bloom profusely until frost.
Reply:I think begonias can do.

Cheap flowers!?

Im doing fake flowers because a florist is too expensive for me. do you know of a good place to get cheap flowers? Internet or a store? Thanks!

Cheap flowers!?
Michael's is really good, especially when they are having sales. also, if you still wanted to do fresh you could go to Costco or Sam's club, they usually do them for really cheap.
Reply:i got mine at michaels
Reply:I got married outside and used potted roses. I just took them to the florist to have the pots made pretty. Then I planted them in my yard. I did have real flowers for boquets and such though
Reply:You can do your fake flowers you self. I did. You can go to a fabric store and they have all that stuff and my looked beautiful and guess what you can save them forever and so can your bride maids
Reply:any craft store really, walmart, sometimes target even sells garlands of flowers and you can take them off there. good luck
Reply:try searching the internet. There are places that rent those out as well. I actually didn't find fake flowers to be cheaper than real one. it just depending on that kind you choose and the season.

I went to costco, get some nice picks (they were nice enough to open the storage area for me to pick for my wedding) and me and a friend arrange everything. And it was cheaper for me that way than to go to a florist or buying fake flowers.
Reply:I did my own flowers and bought them at Wal-Mart, but Michaels Art store has a much larger selection. It was my experience that buying from these stores was much cheaper than ordering flowers online.

Michaels also has a larger selection of bouquet holders and ribbon.
Reply:do you have a hobby lobby by you? They are great.
Reply:My friend did the same thing and hers did not look fake at all. She actually got a lot of comments on how beautiful they looked. I'm pretty sure she got them at AC Moore. Any craft store should have a big selection.

Bf didnt give flowers on valentine's day?

We're on long distance relationship, today is Valentine's day and honestly i was expecting flowers from my boyfriend, but he didnt send me even a single rose. I was kinda upset cause my friends get flowers from their partners,I get jealous,

I felt like im not special on this day.

I asked him why he didnt send me flowers he said he doesnt know how to send one. i have to admit I'm a little bit upset.

Am i demanding? If u are on my situation what will u do?

Bf didnt give flowers on valentine's day?
I dont want flowers - they die.

If he sends you flowers does this mean he loves you?

If youre in love then you shouldnt need token gifts to enforce it.

my fiancee and me have been together for 8 years and have never bothered with valentines day.
Reply:MIne didn't either and we're also in a long distance relationship. I don't consider myself materialistic, but I also think it's kinda lame. But, I probably wouldn't care if there wasn't so much hoopla about this stupid day.
Reply:He sent you a card didn't he? What did you send him? The

V-DAY rule doesn't state that only women recive gifts.
Reply:V-day is just another day, if your man feels this is the only day he can show you how much he loves you then what does that really say about him. When he does this 364 days out the year and not on the 365 day then you know your man wants to give you the world. Accept the card and move on.
Reply:no your not demanding, what an idiot lol! girls should always get flowers on v-day lol, did he get you anything??????? happy v-day! xoxoxoxoxo
Reply:maybe when i'm on your situation, i will be upset too =)) LOL

but just try to understand for the sake of your relationship.

it's not really important if he didn't send you flowers when you know that he's loyal and he really loves you =)
Reply:i agree 100% with the girl above me. a persons love should NOT be measured with valentines day gifts, birthday gifts, anniversary gifts etc. material objects are obsolete when it comes to showing someone how you truly care and love them. I understand that maybe you were a little bit bummed but hey! at least he got you a card and didn't forget completely. But don't measure love with flowers =) I'm sure he loves you just the same Have a good valentines day =)
Reply:when you expect something and dont get it you get disappointed but when you dont expect it and dont get it you wont disappoint yourself, your thinking to much into thesee flowers he thought of you he sent a card, dont make him feel bad, it's not like you didnt get anything.

Novice Gardener...want flowers for front porch...advice?

Hello,

I recently moved to West Virginia and I have a beautiful front porch and I want to put some flower boxes out there to frame the porch, but I don't even know where to begin. I do not have a green thumb. Can I buy flowers already in bloom or do I need to plant bulbs? (see I told you I was a novice!) Any recommendations on the type of flowers?

Thanks!

Novice Gardener...want flowers for front porch...advice?
HI!! Ok, WV is pretty close to the same zone as OH so here we go. You want annuals in your boxes and/or pots on your front porch. When you buy them from the nursery or Home Depot buy some topsoil and miracle grow. Does your front porch get sun or shade? If sun, then pick some bright colors of Petunias, verbena, geraniums, begonias, etc. get some dracena spikes to put in the middle of the pot for some contrast and even some Ipomea (there are differnt colors) to trail down out of the pot/box.

You will want to make sure to feed with miracle grow when you initally plant and then follow the directions on the container for how often to feed. Make sure you "dead head" the dead blooms by picking them off the plant and you can "mow" or cut back all the flowers about once a month to keep them blooming and growing bigger all summer.

Go to the wesite below for examples of what plants to mix together and how they look. Good luck!
Reply:You're Welcome!! Report It

Reply:Go to your local garden center or Lowes and tell them what kind of light the plants will get (direct sun, partial shade, full shade etc) and they will set you up with plants already potted. If you want fancier containers they will have them too. Ask a lot of questions about what kind of care they require. If they come with a little stake with instructions keep it in the soil.

What flowers should I use for my June wedding?

Help! I am so frustrated with my wedding flowers. My bridesmaid dresses are tea rose pink with a dusty rose pink sash. Here is a picture: http://www.alfredangelo.com/Collections/... I don't want expensive flowers- I'm on a budget. I like simple %26amp; elegant. Pink, white, %26amp; green are the colors I've been looking at the most. I need bridesmaid bouquets and a bouquet for myself. I've been racking my brain for weeks %26amp; I've googled hundreds of pictures. PLEASE HELP!

What flowers should I use for my June wedding?
Green hydrangea are stunning but not "budget" flowers. If you are being cost conscious and who can blame you- use the hydrangea in your bouquet only. I wouldn't pair the Gerber daisies with your Hydrangea and Spray Roses. (Personally I think Rannuculi are prettier than the Spray Roses especially with the green Hydrangea. If you want to use Gerberas, use all the different pinks they come in for your bms, along with Yoko Ono green button mums, and green Hypernicum. Ask your florist to show you all these flowers at your next consultation. The different pinks of Rannuculis and Gerber Daisies will give classic and simple bouquets depth, and the berries will add texture.
Reply:I think you should go with gerber daiseys or maybe just lilly's very simple three lilly's together and then just wrap the stems. Now for you how about using the colors from the brides maid dresses mixed with white all baby roses...in a nice bouquet with a simple wrap on the stems-no babies breath is not in now. Good luck...when you see it you will know.
Reply:i used ivory roses and they were beautiful
Reply:I think pink, white and green will look really good!

Maybe you can have pink and white flowers with green folage and your bridesmaids could have a mix of white flowers with green folage...

Reply:How about gerbera daisies? They come in a variety of colors and should be in season (i.e. cheaper) for your wedding. Just google "gerber daisy" or "gerbera daisy."
Reply:Two words: Gerbera Daisies. Get them hand tied and they will be even more reasonable! We are using those for our wedding. We got each bouquet for $30!
Reply:Sometimes inexpensive flowers can be arranged in a way where they really add color or texture without killing a budget. I'm hoping to use babies breath for most of my flower arrangements with roses sparingly, because i love the simplicity but i did find a few pictures using carnations which looked nice. http://www.thailandflowerstore.com/image...

Good luck and talk to a florist they can give valuable advice!
Reply:Try to look in www.costco.com. They have all kinds of flowers and they seem to be at a reasonable price. Also albertsons and publix, they do weddings and I think they could save you a lot of money. Good Luck!!!

I am planning a wedding too.
Reply:Have you been to a florist? Find out what flowers are in season - they are always cheaper. If you are looking at green as part of the colour you can add a lot of foliage to your bouquets - this also reduces the cost quite a bit. I say talk to a florist to get some ideas.
Reply:We're having a wedding in my family in June and the main flowers will be green hydrangeas and pink peonies
Reply:tropical ones... all different types
Reply:What about carnations? Don't disregard them until you try them. They can be clustered into a nice round bouquet and look beautiful. They are also very affordable. Hydrangeas are large enough to make a bouquet with just one or two stems tied together. They have a classy look. They are kind of pricey, but you wouldn't need a lot because they are so big. The gerbera daisy is a nice idea too. They are reasonably priced. You might look into alstromaria bouquets. They are nice in a bunch just tied with ribbon. Now that you have some ideas.... go talk to your florist and tell her/him that you only want to spend so much.
Reply:I would go with the gerbera daisies or a combination of the gerbera daisies with carnations. Both of them are very affordable flowers. I used the gerbera daisies for my bridesmaid bouquets. They looked beautiful, and it didn't take a lot of them to make a bouquet since they are a fairly big flower. The nice part about the gerberas is that they come in many different colors. If you are looking for white and pink here are a few pictures...

Grass flowers?

I know that lawn grass has flowers and of course seeds. Does anyone know what the flowers look like? What sites on the net I can see them on please. Looked but can't find.

Grass flowers?
The things you think are "seeds" on grasses are probably flowers of the grass. They have rather unconventional-looking flowers, and if you see little yellow things (anthers) dangling out, you're looking at a grass in full flower.

There's a pretty good diagram of annual bluegrass flowers and inflorescences here: http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ecoph39.ht...

And here's Kentucky bluegrass, an inflorescence with many open flowers: http://www.arcticatlas.org/species/photo...

If you'd like more information on grass flowers, one of the best beginner's books is an oldie: Agnes Chase's "First Book of Grasses", recently revised and put out by Smithsonian.
Reply:They're not flowers with pretty petals, they're just small green things that ripen and turn into seeds that look like wheat or corn (they're grasses too I think).

Here's an example of a grass flower:

Some grasses do have more prominent flowers like pampas grass for instance or some of the ornamental grasses. But they're pretty boring, just brown and feathery.

What flowers should I use for my medieval wedding?

I would really like some pictures or ideas for my wedding flowers.

My bridesmaids are each wearing a different color medieval gown and I'm wearing a white dress with pears at the waist but otherwise a medieval cut and style i have no color and other then knowing i want to have lots of ivy the symbol of ever growing love I have no idea what to do for the wedding flowers, we're not using any at the reception.

What flowers should I use for my medieval wedding?
Use Lots of Ivy - Ivy is not only the traditional Renaissance wedding green, it is a perfect compliment to the dark, rich colors used during this time period. Add ivy greens to your bouquet. Make the men's boutenierres out of ivy for a masculine, Medieval look. Make garlands of ivy to string across your reception hall or church foyer. Place leafy tendrils down the centers of tables for a natural table-runner.

Incorporate Herbs - Historically, herbs represented the antidote to demon and evil spirit fears of the Renaissance Era. Aesthetically, using herbs such as rosemary, thyme, basil, and sage will add texture, fragrance, and authenticity to your Medieval/Renaissance bouquet. Fill large baskets with a bounty of herbs and wildflowers for excellent centerpieces and altar arrangements. In addition (although it's not technically an herb), brides incorporated wheat into their bouquets as a symbol of fertility.

Fill Arrangements with Wild Berries and Brambles - Another way to relive the 14th and 15th centuries at your wedding is by incorporating the brambly wildflower look by filling large baskets with holly, pine, ivy, and other lush greens with heavy stems and pointed leaves. Then add herbs like heather to create softness, color, and contrast. Create long garlands of dark greenery and wildflowers to string across your reception hall or from window to window in the church for a real Renaisssance feel.

Use the Richest Color Palettes - Let your imagination go heavy on the color when designing your wedding flowers. To show up against so much dark wood and stone, only the deepest colored flowers were used in Medieval/ Renaissance weddings then, so why not now? Go bold with flowers the color of goldenrod, royal blue, scarlet, forest green, purple, and orange.

Reply:Tiny white flowers scattered amidst the ivy.
Reply:White Daisy
Reply:Well, they didn't have florists in medieval times... so they made do with what they could find.

Ancients used herbs, not flowers, in bouquets because they felt herbs--especially garlic--had the power to cast off evil spirits. If a bride carried sage (the herb of wisdom) she became wise; if she carried dill (the herb of lust) she became

lusty. Rosemary was said to ensure the powers of remembrance.

In Tudor England, brides carried marigolds that had been dipped in rosewater. They later ate them. since they were thought to be aphrodisiacs. Later flowers replaced herbs and took on meanings all their own. Orange blossoms, for example, mean happiness and fertility. Ivy means fidelity; lillies mean purity.

They can carry sheaves of wheat, a symbol of growth, fertility, and renewal.

Use mixed wildflowers with stalks of dried

wheat instead of baby's breath.

Should be interesting to put this all together!

Reply:orange blossoms are a tradition: Medieval brides often wore blue, the traditional color of purity, rather than today's white dress.

The traditional Maid of Honor began in England where the senior of the bridesmaids attended to the bride's every need the week or so before her wedding day. She was also responsible for creating the bouquet and other wedding decorations. On the wedding day she would help the bride dress.

During the feast, the bride and groom drank spiced wine from a fine chalice called the Wedding Cup. As midnight approached, guests tried to get into the newlywed's bedchamber to bring them a reinvigorating potion called "Bride's Broth".

Knights returning from the Crusades introduced medieval society to the tradition of a bridal veil. The veil was another symbol of purity and was also believed to protect the bride from "the evil eye."

Garters became an important part of a medieval bride's wardrobe. As the couple hurried to their room, wedding guests followed and tried to grab the garter for good luck. Before this tradition, overzealous wedding guests often shredded the bride's clothing trying to grab a handful of lucky cloth. Tradition held that any man who gave his love a bride's garter would be guaranteed faithfulness.

Flowers were also important in a medieval wedding. Returning crusaders introduced medieval Europe to a Saracen tradition of weaving a crown out of orange blossoms. Only nobles could afford these very expensive blossoms. THE SITE

Look for stone buildings in rural areas. Find out about historic homes in your area, especially those with a Tudor, English-cottage, or castle look (local historical societies can help). Search for castle, keep, or gatehouse replicas near you (there aren't many real castles in the U.S. but there are some! To find them, check out the PBS video, America's Castles). Outdoor settings are perfect for a spring or summer wedding. If you have the space, raise a big white tent adorned with banners and garlands. Rent the special-events pavilion at a renaissance faire or medieval joust for your ceremony and reception -- you can find these re-enactments nationwide. Have the ceremony at a Gothic-style church -- big stones and pointy arches, with a foreboding yet romantic look (ala Billy Idol's "White Wedding" video) -- and hold the reception at a nearby hall. Rent a manor house decorated with tapestries, wooden beams, and candles.

THE ATTIRE

Medieval attire is the most visible way to tout your theme -- your pictures will be unforgettable! Browse historical costume books at the library. Try Margot Lister's Costume: An Illustrated Survey from... (Plays Inc., 1968) or What People Wore: 1,800 Illustrations... (Dover Publications, 1994). Period costume catalogs are also available: The Amazon Drygoods (800) 798-7979, Ravensmoon Replicas, and Museum Replicas Ltd. (800) 883-8838 will all be useful.

Basic medieval attire can consist of:

Royalty: the era's most over-the-top, formal clothes

Merchant: pretty but not showy, indicating modest prosperity

Peasant: casual, carefree, outdoorsy, and largely unembellished

Classic medieval: women in long, slim-fitting gowns; men in tights and tunics

Classic renaissance: women in tight bodices and full skirts; men in tights, breeches, pirate shirts, and lace vests

Remember that simple styles will be most comfortable -- some formal medieval clothes are heavy and confining. You two might want to be completely decked out, with simpler clothes for the wedding party. Where to find the clothes? Order them from catalogs, have them custom-made, or rent them from local costume shops.

THE INVITATIONS

Print invitations on heavy parchment in calligraphic type (or real calligraphy). Theme-appropriate motifs include simple flowers, fancy scrolls, heraldic symbols, and metallic embossing. Rich jewel-tone colors look very medieval, especially when combined with gold or silver -- think of illuminated texts. Look for parchment stock at a local printer-supply company and add a period border from a clip art book. A local printer can set text in a calligraphic style and print the invitations; you can color the border to suit your tastes. Fold each invitation in thirds and tie with a satin ribbon. Browse mail-order catalogs such as the American Wedding Album, Camelot, Ann's, Rexcraft, and Dawn for invitations depicting castles.

The Medieval Wedding Guide by Vanessa Hand suggests this wording for invitations and announcements:

In olden days, letters were sealed with wax, often with a family seal imprinted on it. Today, the post office frowns on sealing outer envelopes with wax. When they get run through the stamping machine -- which is hot -- the wax melts. Save the wax for inside envelopes or reception favors.

THE CEREMONY

Tie the knot with this meaningful touch from The Medieval Wedding Guide: Medieval brides believed knots symbolized good luck, hope, and steadfastness, so they tied their bouquets with numerous knots. During your vows, you might want to symbolize this tradition: Ask your officiant or an honored friend to bind your hands together with ribbon.

THE FARE

Medieval wedding guests feasted on mutton (sheep), roast peacock (served with tail feathers!), quail, pheasant, squab, venison, boar, eels, bread, eggs, and cheese. Fowl was very popular in the fifteenth century. Spices like cinnamon, cloves, mace, saffron, and especially pepper were savored. Feasters also enjoyed ginger, anise, and nutmeg, along with many common (and uncommon) herbs such as parsley, basil, galingale, rosemary (mentioned in Shakespeare's Hamlet), and thyme. Braised lettuces, leeks, shallots, parsnips, turnips, apples, and plums were a standard part of the menu. If historic accuracy is your goal, avoid squash, pumpkins, potatoes, tomatoes, and chocolate (well, maybe you can cheat a little). These are New World foods that European medievals would never have recognized. Medieval party animals drank mead, a thick, fermented beverage made of honey, malt, and yeast. Also called honey wine, mead can still be found in a few specialty liquor stores but most of what's labeled as mead is really grape or other fruit wine with honey in it. (The medieval types weren't yet into champagne, though wine was fine as a mead substitute!). Borrow or rent brass, silver, pewter, or wooden place settings. Pewter goblets are a great touch -- at the very least, get a pair for yourselves so you can toast each other in style!

THE FLOWERS

According to the Medieval Wedding Guide, old-time weddings were often adorned with dried flowers. The bouquet, usually given to the bride by her mother, had great significance. For example, wheat was included to wish the bride fertility in family matters and with crops. If you want to include a meaningful medieval custom, select bouquet (or boutonniere or centerpiece) flowers that are native to the bride's and groom's hometown(s), plus a flower from their future locale. Medieval peasants did this to symbolize the couple's union in lieu of expensive rings. The ancients used herbs in bouquets to deter evil spirits (they especially liked garlic, which we don't recommend!). If a bride carried sage (the herb of wisdom), she became wise. Rosemary represented remembrance. In Tudor England, brides carried marigolds dipped in rosewater and ate them afterward as they were thought to be aphrodisiacs! Centuries later, flowers replaced herbs and took on meanings.

Knot Note: Check out Victorian Weddings to learn about the meaning of flowers.

THE FAVORS

In the world of chivalry, a lady often gave her lover a favor -- a scarf or handkerchief -- before he went into a battle or joust. At renaissance faires, you can buy small pendants, ribbons, rosettes, tassels, or other wearable trinkets, which were often used as favors by nobility. Additional ideas:

Parchment scrolls printed with a favorite poem and tied with velvet ribbon

Miniature wreaths of dried flowers and herbs

Quill pens with a clever note attached

Velvet pouches filled with potpourri

Small flasks of mead or fruit wine

Tickets to a local renaissance faire (you might get a group rate)

Little brass bells tied with ribbons imprinted with your names. People can ring them to get you to kiss, instead of clanging their glasses

Good luck, hope this helps!!!.

What kind of flowers would look good with my wedding colors, periwinkle, navy blue, and white?

I think I want a cascading bouquet with white lilies and hydrangeas. My bridesmaids dresses are periwinkle and the grooms vest and bow ties are periwinkle, my fiance's vest and tie are navy blue and my dress is just white. I think my bridesmaids flowers might just be white lilies so they will stand out from the dresses. Does anyone know of any pictures I could look at to get a better idea of what I want? Or any idea of flowers that look good together or other flowers I might add?

I think that the cascading bouquet with the lilies and hydrangeas will look beautiful.

The bridesmaids carrying white lilies would look lovely - but the lilies can get pricey. If you are trying to save a little money the gerbera daisies are a beautiful flower and make a lovely bridesmaid bouquet.

I think that having some lilies with roses wrapped in perwinkle would look lovely. Maybe these pictures could help. I hope it gives you some ideas

Birthday Flowers?

I sent an ex girlfriend flowers at her office for her birthday %26amp; she refused them. A friend of mine said that was tacky %26amp; rude of her since we were suppose to remain friends. I was disappointed, but what I want to know is, do I still have to pay for these flowers that will probably be on my credit card? They were $60. My friend said that I will still have to pay for them.

Birthday Flowers?
It was really rude of her..

she must not of wanted to upset another person in her office???? so she rejected them.. but u are sure they got the correct place and girl?

I would go pick the flowers up at the florist and give them to my mom or someone.. especially if u have to pay for them.. give them to a church..

good luck
Reply:Hi There,

We are leading florists in the UK. Unfortunately, yes, you will have to pay for the flowers. Flowers are made to order and are perishable. If the address is incorrect, or if there are any other problems, florists normally contact the customer to rectify before the flowers are dispatched. However, once they are out for delivery, and the recipient refuses to accept flowers, the customer has to bear the costs. For example, if the florists deliver flowers to a Porter and the recipient refuses to collect it from the Porter, there's nothing much the porter could do. I hope it helps.
Reply:yea you probably will.. maybe she felt like you were still trying to be with her.. depending on who broke up with who.. i dont know.. thats sad though.. she didnt have to be such a ***** about it.. i would have at least excepted them and them handed them out to my other co-workers.. sorry but why let them go to waste..

Growing Flowers In Michigan....?

i would like to have a small flower garden. i have some room for full sun and a bit more room for shade or partial shade. im a beginner so i dont want to grow something i cant handle. i would also like to try and grow some pet-friendly flowers indoors, nothing that is poisonous to cats or dogs. please give me some suggestions.

Growing Flowers In Michigan....?
I agree, do not go to a large box store to purchase plants UNLESS you know what types will grow and not require lots of attention. Some plants spread rapidly and become a nuisance.

I suggest starting with a mix of annuals and perenials. And slowly add more perenials.

The website below has information on a pet friendly yard and plants.
Reply:michigan has 4 zones for plants. it will greatly depend on what area you are in. your local garden center will gladly point out what you can grow or make suggestions for you. DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT go to places like wal-mart, kmart. lowes, home depot. they do not have plant savy people there, like they do at a real garden or landscaping center. look in yellow pages.
Reply:You live in a big state with two big parts to it. We need more info. Are you a yooper? Or do you live in the bottom half? In the thumb, the middle, or the Lake Michigan side?

OK, as an ex Grand Haven resident, you can plant hostas, cyclamen, astilbe in the shade, pansies, petunias, snapdragons in the sun. Go to a nursery near you. You will find everything you need.

Which flowers to plant?

I live in Arkansas and was wondering what type of flowers I could plant that would be low maintenance. Any other suggestions would be helpful. I am just needing to have a small flower garden on the sides of my front porch to add curb appeal. thanks

Which flowers to plant?
Petunias! They are SO easy and you don't have to do a thing except water them if there is a drought. They take abuse and keep on blooming and spreading , they re-seed themself so once you plant a few you'll never have to buy more. Cosmos are easy too, dont have to do anything to them either and they self-sow too. Lantanas are very easy and they are more like bushes so could be your "foundation" shrubs since they get big and bushy. They come in all colors too, yellow, orange, pinks, purple, and multi.

Another flower that is brown-thumb proof is vinca. Any kind. They will bloom and grow and bloom and grow all summer until frost, and they self-seed and will grow back again next season and there will be more than you want. You don't have to do anything except water if it gets really dry. They come in white, light pink, dark pink, reds...
Reply:Low maintenance in Arkansas (what zone are you?). I am Zone 7B, and I think you would be in that neighborhood - I recommend a Pomegranite - they are technically a shrub but the bloom for long periods. Also some stella daylillies. Gallardias are nice and bloom a long time. I adore Salvias of all types, because although the foliage has a strong smell when you touch it, they are carefree bloomers all summer, normally - even the annual varieties tend to re-seed if you leave the bed undisturbed. Coleus may reseed as well in your area and the leaf color it great on many of those.

Yeah - Coleus, Zinnias, Salvias - some Stellas where you want greenery and texture but can accept less flowering.
Reply:if you have a lot of sun in that spot, try day lillies. They like the heat, lots of sun, and once established are somewhat drough tolerant. Another, black eyed susans which require very little maintenance. Once they start growing you shouldn't even have to water them!

You should plant BIG(tall too), COLORFUL flowers.

Make a pattern, like red flowers then yellow flowers, then purple flowers, then orange...you know.

Orchids also make a statement in tropical. Get a WIDE VARIETY OF COLORS. That will do it.

Reply:Hibiscus is great, has large (6-12 inch) blossoms in pink, white, and red, and loves water (the original marsh mallow plant), and grows wild as far north as missouri.

Oleander, pretty, but I think it's poisonous--I wouldn't grow if you plan on having kids or dogs around the pool.

Jasmine--shrub with white, exotic looking, small, VERY FRAGRANT flowers. Comes in a lot of colors, but white is most common.

Mimosa--if you want a tree with pink, fluffy, cotton candy like flowers. Up close, the flowers looks like clumps of 1 1/2 inch long hairs. Also, very fragrant. Leaves are ferny looking.

A nice vining plant is Mandevilla. Mine's blossoms are fuschia, but I think it comes in white and yellow (rare). It doesn't have a strong fragrance. Leaves are dark and glossy. I have one and it's beautiful--one of my favorite tropical viners. Flowers look slightly similar to a morning glory but ends of petals are separate, rather than being a solid edged cup.

Bougainvillea is also a very pretty vining plant. I don't know how it tolerates water lots of water.

California Fan Palm can tolerate wet situations. Definitely not a "flower", but an exotic looking plant.

Personally, I'd find a knowledgeable garden designer if you're planning on buying a lot of exotics. You don't want to spend that kind of money only to find it doesn't work in your area. There is a HUGE difference in what you can grow in N. Fla and S. Fl down in the panhandle. While some plants may tolerate a bit of rain if they have good drainage, wet feet may kill them. Sometimes sales people in garden centers (especially if it's not a big chain) are VERY knowledgeable and won't charge you for their information.
Reply:hibiscus, oleander, croton-all are differing heights and sizes.

Ideas for using flowers in an outside wedding?

We are doing our own flowers for the wedding. I'm just wondering how many flowers need to be ordered for the outside...and what ideas do you have for doing that? I thought about having a hupdha(sp) or a terrace filled with greenery and flowers, do you have any tips? TIA

Ideas for using flowers in an outside wedding?
I would use silks if you are doing it yourself. Not cheap dollarstore silks....high end ones from someplace like Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge. If you catch a sale (which they run ALL THE TIME) it can be half the price of real flowers, if not more and look just the same.

1. flowers need to be refregierated....what are you going to put all those roses in

2. are you experienced enough to make sure they are at their best blooming time on wedding day. From your questions..probably not

3. do you know enough not to choose a flower that will quickly wilt in the heat or make sure the smell doesn't overwhelm the room you put them in?

4. if you start putting together something and realize "I don't have enough" you can simply run out and pick up some more. Can't really do that on wedding day.

Plus with silks you have your choice of either keepsakes or reselling them to get some dough back and everything can be made weeks beforehand which really takes the pressure off. Splurge and have real flowers for something like your boquet but other wise....silk.

Reply:Well Poinettas Are Nice if it is a winter wedding. Hibiscus For Spring And For Summer And Fall, Just Find Something That Is Light Coloured or Auntum-ish.
Reply:It's Chuppah or Huppah. 500 flowers or more. Depending if you want them to go all around. You can have them full in the center of the Chuppah.

Even you can purchase a foam ball (Hobby Lobby). There green and they come in different sizes. You can stick real or fake flowers in them. Tie them with a nice satin ribbon. Hang them from the Chuppah!

That way you can save money without having them cover all over.
Reply:Copy off of this picture only in your colors. It's beautiful and would be WAY easier than decorating a arch way or colanade. I too am doing my own flowers and we are copying exactly off this picture only in our wedding colors. You can go to Michael's or Garden Ridge and get the vases. Good Luck!

How long till flowers regrow? Night blooming Jasmine-?

I have a night blooming jasmine, it is healthy, but in shipping all but 4 flowers fell off, and the four still on it are still open*blooming?* I want to know how long will it take for new flowers to grow or will I have to wait a year for them to return?

Also are the flowers that are open all the time okay or is it a sign of something wrong.

How long till flowers regrow? Night blooming Jasmine-?
I don't know what state (growing zone) you are in, but most gardens are about to go to sleep for the fall and winter. Unless you live in a very warm state such as southern Calif. or Florida, I'm sure your wonderful jasmine will soon loose it's flowers and close down for the winter.

If it is growing in a pot, you can keep it going through the winter by bringing it in the house and setting it in a south facing window. Don't forget to water it ever so often, it will need water. Stick your finger down into the soil about two inches and see if it feels dry. You can do this now too while it is outside.

What kind of flowers can I seed in June that will bloom this year?

I love the look of flowers, but I don't have convenient access to a nursery or garden center. I wonder if there are any kind of flowers that I can start in my garden now in June from seed, that would flower anytime this year? So far, I've planted poppies, sunflowers and cosmos. I know the sunflowers will bloom this year, but will the poppies and cosmos? Any thing else I can try?

What kind of flowers can I seed in June that will bloom this year?
It's getting a bit late to be sowing seeds for flowering this year....I would recommend just buying some trays of ready grown alyssum, lobelia, petunia, french marigold etc and planting these out instead.

if you want to grow stuff from seed, try Calendula (Pot Marigold) which is very fast to germinate and flowers within two months. Nigella (Love in a mist) is also a fast grower and will flower in September of you sow seeds now.
Reply:rose,china rose
Reply:just go to the grocery store and get a six pack of panseys and marigolds stuff like that that is already started and you can see the flowers all summer. daisys too.
Reply:Cosmos, esp. varieties of C. sulphureus ( orange/yellow/reddish-orange) ,Zinnias, Sunflowers ,Portulaca are all good . If the popies are annual ones, they will bloom
Reply:try Marigolds, Nasturtium, impatiens, sweet alyssum,lobelia,Pansy,...etc...check the back of the seed packets and it will tell you "days to flower" and "days to germinate" That is how long it takes the seed to sprout... and then it is whatever days to flower from that point...Good Luck..

Cross-fertilization of flowers?

1. Name 2 ways that cross-fertilization of flowers might happen (besides by the wind)?

2. Why do you suppose the petals of flowers are so colorful, fragrant, uniquely shaped?

3. How many stamens do you see in your flower?

4. Why do you think the stigma is sticky?

Cross-fertilization of flowers?
What is this.... Botany 201? ...I thought I already acquired my college credits for this course!! LOL

PS... Hop, you passed with flying colors!! ...Now he can turn in the homework assignment!

**Billy Ray**
Reply:1. The birds and insects, not to mention almost all animal groups.

2. The petals of the flower can act as directional beacons for the pollinator. That is directing them to the stigma and stamens. Color is important. Bees cannot see red. White flowers are often pollinated at night by moths. Fragrance can be an attractant or a repellent. You forgot nectar (carbohydrate source) and pollen (protein source), both of which are important foods for hummingbirds and insects.

3. The number varies from 1 to hundreds, depending on which species of flower.

4. The stigma is a complex structure. Sticky so pollen, carried by a pollinator can be removed from the body or legs of the pollinator. Also can contain pollen germination inhibitors, or promotors.
Reply:Birds and bees and other insects.

To attract those pollinators that may be meant for it.

Depends upon the flower.

To have the pollen adhere.

Ordering flowers online?

we're trying to save money where we can, so my mother is going to do the flowers (she was a florist for a few years)

has anyone had expierience getting their wedding flowers in bulk from a website, how long do they last? should i do it?

Ordering flowers online?
best thing to do is go to Stop and Shop...they have the best flowers if youre gonna do them yourself...i got roses and they lasted me two weeks...changing water everyday
Reply:you may be better off speaking with a local florist (small shop) ask them if they would consider ordering the flowers for you in bulk and take a 10 percent markup from cost.

You would get them fresh and would be assured of high quality.
Reply:Hi. Yes, I ordered roses for my son's wedding from rosesource.com

http://www.rosesource.com/

They sell all kinds of flowers, not just roses, but I did order roses. You can read my testimonial on their site. It's under "Gail B."

I was EXTREMELY nervous ordering, but everything worked out! I don't have to tell you (or your mom) how much work it is, I'm sure your mom knows. Since the wedding was on a Saturday, I had the roses delivered on Thursday, and we did up centerpieces, etc. on Friday. It is a HUGE savings! I ordered 250 roses (which would have cost me well over $1,250 locally, and I only paid (in 2006) $160!!

They held up well and looked beautiful for the reception! Well worth it.

Another reputable one is: www.growersbox.com

I almost went with them until I stumbled upon rosesource and since I wanted roses, I went with them instead (and they were a little cheaper than growersbox.)

What flowers survive best with alot of sunlight?

I live on a street that runs east and west, so the sun hits my yard all day. I still would like to plant flowers, but I am afraid that too much sun will hurt them. What kind of flowers can I plant that will thrive in all of that sunlight?

What flowers survive best with alot of sunlight?
These are all sun loving and easy to grow with low maintenance and beautiful as well

Reply:Two plants that love sunlight and dry soil : Yarrow and purple cone flower. They are perennials and need little attention.
Reply:sunflowers, zinnias, calendulas, marigolds
Reply:sunflowers
Reply:Marigolds. Any variety.
Reply:Try Mexican Hats (a perennial) or day lillies. Both take the sun pretty well. Liatris also do pretty well in the sun and so do Echinacea. You'll just need to water fairly well the first year. Day lillies seem to do the best. Russian sage also does good.
Reply:Gosh, I envy you! My yard is almost all shade and it really limits the types of plants I can grow. When you go to your local nursery, the plants will have tags that tell you whether the plant likes sun or shade. But generally the brightest colored flowers need the most sun. You can choose from roses, lantana, blue daze, gallardia, Mexican heather, petunias, zinnias, marigolds, and a whole host of other ones! Enjoy.
Reply:Most annuals do great in a full sun area. The only catch is you have to replant them every year. There are some perennials, however, that thrive in full sun. Try this website:

Reply:sunflower??
Reply:I have a garden like that, I just put annual in it, so try portulaca it is great for a sunny spot and has nice flowers and I have a perennial in there called cheddar pinks, they grow really good in there and they have beautiful little pink flowers. Definitely try the portulaca though. Petunias like sun as well and are very bright and colourful, you can buy wave petunias and they spead out really nicely as ground cover, just be sure to pick of the dead flowers to promote constant blooming. Two more I just thought of are dahlias althought they need a good amount of water and geraniums grow well in sun as well.
Reply:bougainvillea. they require at least 6 hours of sun a day so they'd be perfect.
Reply:My house is set up like that too. I grow morning glories and moon flowers up some bird netting stapled to the front of the porch. They grow all the way up, flower beautifully, and keep the house cooler by shading the front of the house during the hottest part of the year. In the winter I take the netting down so my house can be warmed by the sun again. They're annuals but tend to drop a ton of seeds in the fall that come right up in the spring.
Reply:sunflower
Reply:The plant / landscaper's term for a lot of sunlight is "full sun." Go to a place selling plants. When you see something you like, look for the tag in the pot. It may say "full sun" or perhaps have a yellow sun picture on it. If so, it's OK for your location. Pay attention to height, which is also on the tag. Pick out a variety of colors, textures and get some tall plants for the back of the bed. Have fun and Good Luck !!

Wedding Flowers (Silk)?

Does anyone do a website where I can get reasonably priced silk wedding flower for my wedding. Bouitneers, bridesmaid flowers, etc..

Wedding Flowers (Silk)?
One of the cheapest ways to do it is to build them yourself, hit up WalMart. They are able to order in as many as you need, in whatever style you want.
Reply:Please try Michaels, and create your own they are a great help.
Reply:try www.weddings.com

congrats on getting married!!
Reply:www.idobouquets.com

I got mine from there. They are beautiful. My bouquet is 16" cascading bouquet with white, navy, and light blue flowers. I spent $110.00 and got my bouquet, 1 maid of honor bouquet, 4 bridemaids bouquets, 1 groom's boutinere, 8 corsages, 8 groomsmen/usher boutineres, and a tossing bouquet.

They have dozens of color combos and will custom make a package in your colors to fit your needs. Highly recommended :-)

Congrats! (and don;t listen to the nay sayers. My flowers are gorgeous and I am glad I went with silk)
Reply:make them. they are so easy to do and the flowers they have now days look so real.
Reply:Try the brides bouquet. I saw some that were really great looking. Good luck!!

What flowers bloom in August in Zone 5?

I live in Eastern Ontario and I was wondering what flowers will be in bloom around the 5th of August. My grandmother is getting married and I wanted to make the boquet out of flowers from mine or my mother's gardens. Thanks!

What flowers bloom in August in Zone 5?
Regardless of what flowers in your garden, don't overlook beautiful foliage. I often make a bouquet of ferns, sago palm, long blades of grass, seedheads; just walk around and see what looks unblemished. Green is beautiful. Makes a great vase of different shades of green.
Reply:I'm in Chicago - in early August the big new bloomers are the large Hydrangeas and the Rose of Sharons. I have a 20 foot long, 10 foot high wall of pink, white and lavender. They make beautiful bouquets - the hydrangeas dry to pretty, subtle colors of rose, green and beige and look beautiful as dried arrangements in the winter.

Wedding Flowers?

Hey everyone. I am getting married on June 2, 2007, and I need some advice on flowers. I would like to know what is in season, and I want the bouquets to stand out, but I don't want to use just plain white. So, if you have any adivice, or a good wedding flower website, I will glady take it! Thanks so much!

Wedding Flowers?
I found this useful seasonal flower guide at http://www.elegala.com/flowers-season.ht...

It's not just a list of flowers - it actually shows pictures of each type (which helps for those of us who don't know what each type of flora looks like!). This will help you get an idea of what types of blooms will work with your color scheme and budget.
Reply:roses are red, violets areBLUE
Reply:Take a look at this website: http://www.tigerlilyweddings.com/june.iv...

It lists a lot of the flowers that are in season during June...this website: http://www.tigerlilyweddings.com/yearrou... has a listing of flowers that are available year-round.

Calla Lillies are very classy and simple. You don't need a lot of them to make a bold statement with your bouquets...have your bridesmaids carry only 3 or 4 in a bold color that will stand out against the dresses; like a mango/orange.

For your bouquet, you can mix in some roses or hydrangeas to make a really dramatic combo. You should also add some accent flowers, like the hydrangeas, to the centerpieces.
Reply:Orchids are the flowers of classyness and elegance... The dress is WOW!!! beautiful colors,,,,, to put emphasis on the bouquet... have some colors that are not striking but that would make ot stand out alive in your hand... orchids come in white, purple (more plum like) and pink (dark)... so........... these colors (upon your preferance) will do the job... arrange them in a bouquet at their length and add big green leaves..... it will look very special and customised for you!!!

Congradulations!!!!!
Reply:I think it would be pretty to have bright colored flowers. I love summer weddings that have bright blues, purples, reds and oranges. The are beautiful. I got married last summer and we had fire and ice roses and pink roses. It was great! Good luck with the planning! BTW, check out www.theknot.com if you haven't already. they have great ideas and you can ask other people for advice on their message board.
Reply:it might be nice to do a mix of colors in the bouquet. since its so hard to find a dark blue flower..a mix of light blues, purples and white that are in the same tone would look lovely against the solid color gowns! try hydrangea, iris and orchids. you might also want to look into having flowers dyed. try asking a local florist for advice too.
Reply:I don't know about the flowers, but those are beautiful dresses! Great color choice! Congratulations!
Reply:Lillies, Tiger lily, Orchids, Arum Lily

Frangipanis are gorgeous too

Iris mixed in with the Lillies will go gorgeous with the dresses

Black Flowers....?

Ok, I am getting Married and I am not going to give away the whole color shceme but I need to find PRETTY, REAL Black flowers to add into the bouquet. I don't want people who are going to answer with "really, you want black" or "are you sure that is the color you want?" I just need to know what the flower names are... I have looked at black magic roses, black cally lillies.... they look too purple Any help would be much appreciated.

Black Flowers....?
Check out OffBeat Bride - they have a Brides of the Night tribe there - sounds like you could get a lot of help from these gals. http://offbeatbride.com/

they have lots of goth wedding ideas to share - best of luck
Reply:well threes no such thing as black flowers actually there just dark purple but they look black
Reply:There is no such thing as a natural black flower however based on the pigment in the flower they just appear to be black. Many of them are usually a deep purple however you may be able to check with your local florist to see if there's a flower that can stand up to be dyed black in color. However it is recommended that black flowers are only used as an accent in a bouquet. I hope that helps you and I wish you the very best. Once you've had your bouquet made I love to see what it looks like.
Reply:I would maybe get carnations or caila lillies and dye them black.
Reply:Hi. There are no true "black" flowers. I know about the black magic roses....my daughter-in-law had those...but they are actually a "red" rose.

I LOVE flowers, but don't know of any true black ones. The only ones are silks....and they will look really fake!

Have you met with a florist? They can help and guide you.
Reply:there are no true black flowers!
Reply:I am not sure what type of flower are in these pictures, but you could take the pictures to a florist and they could tell you. I did an image search for black flowers. Good luck!
Reply:Here's a bouquet that I think will give you the look you want. I wouldn't get too hung up on the flowers being totally black, I think the purple accents give the look a little more sophistication and dimension. Beautiful choice!

http://www.lebouquetier.com/gallery4.htm...
Reply:My colors were black and red, my bouquet was all red flowers with black painted fern fronds and mondo grass intermixed in it, my bridesmaids had all white flowers with the same black foliage, it look great.

http://www.geocities.com/frudrake/garden...
Reply:You could settle this quickly by telephoning a couple of florists. They'll tell you that black flowers are made by breeding the darkest possible of a true color, usually purple, and there are not black flowers without a hint of a color.

ps - I won't be able to sleep without knowing the rest of your color scheme. Please please please let me know, I promise to keep it secret.
Reply:I believe any flowers can be dyed black if silk - unsure about live flowers.

However, flowers that naturally come in black are Pansies, Roses, Tulip, Lilies, Kangaroo Paw, Iris, %26amp; Begonia.
Reply:Unless you set a flower on fire and display the charred remains that isn't a way to get black flowers naturally. The best you can do is going to be to pick out a flower that's slightly off (like a purple calla) in a deep shade of navy or purple. It may be slightly noticable in person but they photograph black. Always, always take pics of flowers to make sure they show up good. For instance in person a chocolate cosmo is a delicate detailed flower in a rich brown. On film they just show up as black dots.

You could get silk flowers that are black but I've never found any that don't scream 'fake flowers!" from across the room because of the color. Perhaps even consider using black beads or ribbon to make non-floral black accents.

Painting the flowers is an option but make sure whoever does it has good experience. An amature can mess up and you'll have black smudges on everything.
Reply:I believe there is a variety of black tulips. http://www.gardening-guides.com/flowers/...

http://www.bulb.com/templates/dispatcher...

but they too can tend to be more purple than black. You can always dye the flowers (have them soak in dyed water) but you run the risk of the dye leaking and bleeding out of the ends and this can ruin your dress.

Check out this link. Someone asked the same question and it looks like they got better answers. The black baccarra rose, cosmos, dahlia, iris, etc.

Reply:a lot of "black" flowers are going to appear purple in color. if you want truly black flowers, you may have to go with fakes (i hate telling you that because i HATE fake flowers!).

i found a site in which it shows several different kinds of black flowers. you'll probably have to special order them from a florist so be sure to give them plenty of time!

http://www.alchemy-works.com/black_flowe...
Reply:Im sorry idk what there called but i loveeee black flowers. especially black roses.

Hope u find out what there called.Good luck!
Reply:Black flowers are an AWESOME "out of the box" choice! Ask your florist to paint them black if they are not quite black enough. The paint they use makes the flower look like it came out of th ground that way! And you could ask for a demo from the florist, just to be sure you'll like it! :-)
Reply:Black flowers don't exist in nature. You can get black silks though. What they call black flowers that are real are actually such a deep dark red or purple that they appear black in certain lighting.
Reply:cool
Reply:the black calla lilies are beautiful. id go with those.
Reply:I know that you being upclose the flowers will think they look purple but will they look purple in photos or to the other people there? I like the idea i think it sounds pretty!

Do you give flowers?

If you are a guy, do you give flowers to your girlfriend? If you are a lady, do you ever give flowers to your man?

I have been dating my boyfriend for 4 months and he has never given me flowers. Is this normal? He knows that I like them...is there a way of hinting him in some way?

What is your opinion?

Do you give flowers?
Yes your man should have given you some flowers by now. The problem you're having is related to guys not being thought how to date. Men and women, particularly the younger group have been alienated from these simply traditional methods of showing how special a person is in their lives. For instances, people often give the wrong color rose to their co-workers, friends, family members, and that someone special person in their life. It's not all about sex; its also about finding out what makes that person happy, and doing it. Have one of your friends to hint to him about flowers. Or even better, hint to him your favorite flower and color.

Guys should show that shivery isn't dead. Women don't be shy to give your man flowers for whatever particular reason. Just make sure they are too effeminate.
Reply:i do. ask him to give.
Reply:I give flowers to my wife, and I do other things. It will kill the spontaneity if you have to tell him to give you flowers. However, if you pass subtle hints, and he pays attention and finally gets you flowers, then you get what you wanted, and it shows you that he listens.
Reply:Just make a passing comment like WHY THE F*** DON'T YOU EVER GIVE ME FLOWERS!!! and maybe he'll get you some. And you could always put some flowers in your panties and ask him if he wants to take a sniff of your bush.
Reply:yeah some times

its normal that a guy or a girl dont give flower to their freind

if u want him to give u flower u start giving him some he will get it
Reply:flowers are a nice suprise
Reply:guys dont get hints.

some people think not to buy flowers, they are just going to die.
Reply:Flowers are a bad omen, they die out like many relationships. Just kidding. As a woman I don't really like flowers that much, but I guess if its from some guy who loves me I'm okay with it. I prefer chocolate though. But its sweet when a guy buys you flowers so hopefully he will get you one soon.
Reply:I think every girl deserves flowers... you could just try asking for them sometime...

What flowers should i bring to the family of teh deceased, out of sympathy?

I dont mean flowers to bring to the funeral. i mean just flowers to give as a courtesy to the daughter of the deceased.

What flowers should i bring to the family of teh deceased, out of sympathy?
Tasteful--nothing too bright and cheery; but nothing all black and goth either!

Both main floral Web sites--FTD.com and 1800flowers.com have sympathy sections. Check those out to get ideas, or simply order from one of them. You don't have to personally hand the family flowers; you can send them.

You are kind to think of your friend at this time in her life.
Reply:Any kind that smell good! Carnations, roses, bouquet of mixed spring flowers.
Reply:something light and airy. very springlike.pinks,white,yellows. so many think red is the color to use when there is a death. for me, that just makes me think more about the death itself. put some color and life into their day. it will help them to smile and, who doesn't want that?
Reply:Don't bring flowers.
Reply:i attended a funeral a few months ago and faced with a similar problem and called the funeral home on proper etiquite. i cant fully recall but i think some sort of white orchid. my condolences to the deceased. good luck
Reply:A nice bouquet in a vase with a hand written note expressing sympathy is what i do. Nice simple flowers in a simple arrangement.

Which flowers would you rather recieve from your granddaughter?

I'm sending flowers to my grandma but I don't know which ones she would like the best...and don't want to ask her obviously because that would give it away....

Which flowers would a grandma rather have?

She likes baskets but I also think the teddy bear is cute.

http://i89.photobucket.com/albums/k235/m...

Which flowers would you rather recieve from your granddaughter?
Teddy bear. :) It has "Awww..." appeal.
Reply:I would recommend carnations or lilies, but those two are my favorite....

I do know that certain flowers have significant meanings behind them, so you may want to research that one as well.

For example, lillies is my absolute favorite flower, but I do know they symbolize "death" so I'm not sure if that is the best choice for you, Bella.

I recommend you go with what are your personal favorite, and a personalized note on why you chose that type of flower.

Best wishes!

and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Reply:That last one that you just added is the one I would send. It's simple, she can use the vase again, and it's got both the classic roses and sweet gerbera daisies. Very nice.
Reply:She will not care what flowers you send, she will love any of them. Check and see what her flowers are for her birthday. She might like something like that. I know I would love any flowers I get from my family.
Reply:Go with the basket.
