Novice Gardener...want flowers for front porch...advice?

Hello,

I recently moved to West Virginia and I have a beautiful front porch and I want to put some flower boxes out there to frame the porch, but I don't even know where to begin. I do not have a green thumb. Can I buy flowers already in bloom or do I need to plant bulbs? (see I told you I was a novice!) Any recommendations on the type of flowers?

Thanks!

HI!! Ok, WV is pretty close to the same zone as OH so here we go. You want annuals in your boxes and/or pots on your front porch. When you buy them from the nursery or Home Depot buy some topsoil and miracle grow. Does your front porch get sun or shade? If sun, then pick some bright colors of Petunias, verbena, geraniums, begonias, etc. get some dracena spikes to put in the middle of the pot for some contrast and even some Ipomea (there are differnt colors) to trail down out of the pot/box.

You will want to make sure to feed with miracle grow when you initally plant and then follow the directions on the container for how often to feed. Make sure you "dead head" the dead blooms by picking them off the plant and you can "mow" or cut back all the flowers about once a month to keep them blooming and growing bigger all summer.

Go to the wesite below for examples of what plants to mix together and how they look. Good luck!

Reply:Go to your local garden center or Lowes and tell them what kind of light the plants will get (direct sun, partial shade, full shade etc) and they will set you up with plants already potted. If you want fancier containers they will have them too. Ask a lot of questions about what kind of care they require. If they come with a little stake with instructions keep it in the soil.
