Best flowers for a beginner?

I was thinking about starting a flower garden in my backyard. I live in Southern California. Anyone know any flowers that I can care for easily?

Best flowers for a beginner?
It's not about the best flower, or easiest flower, or flowers for dummies. its about YOUR SOIL!!!!!!!!

Improve your soil so that it is richly organic, well cultivated, and drains well. I cannot state loud enough nor long enough-its THE SOIL!!

Guess what? make it right and you can grow just about anything your climate zone will allow.

Remeeber it not the flowers for beginners-it's the SOIL for beginners!

Reply:I agree with this except to add that no one soil is ideal for all flowers. So you might try working with what you already have and see what grows well in your natural soil. You might be surprised. Report It

Reply:Sunflowers, nasturtium, impatiens and roses are all pretty easy for beginners.

Here is a site with more suggestions:

Reply:Lantana is easy...and it doesn't use a ton of water.
Reply:Try marigolds,or shasta daisies.Marigolds will grow anywhere...no muss no fuss,as will shasta daisies. The daisies will reseed themselves and come back year after year. The marigolds are annual so they die off in the winter months, but you can collect the seeds, and replant next year.
Reply:zinnias are easy to grow, as well as impatients and hostas

zinnias, like sun and the other two like shade....
Reply:Marigolds and chrysanthemums - and they drive away wasps and bees!
Reply:Marigolds are good for beginners. They keep bugs away. They are heat and drought tolerant. Vincas are also easy to grow. Just water them every other day or so...even in extreme heat.
Reply:Impatients are the easiest flowers I have ever grown and they really grow well.Hostas arent considered a flower but they are pretty tough too but they need some shade.
