Colourful flowers?

I have just recently started redoing my garden, the only problem is that I need much more colour, would anyone know some names of colourful flowers. I live in Zambia so it is quite hot the only coldish months are may June July August.


I need flowers for Full Sun, No Sun and some in between.

Reply:Although most flowers say you can plant them in full sun, all flowers do much better in partical sun. I find that Petunias are very colorful and hardy. Geranimums are also. If you like yellow and orange, Marigolds are also very hardy and colorful. Another favorite of mine is Snapdragon. They are extremely hardly. I once had some blooming in January and that's when it's cold and snowy where I live.

Reply:try lilies....Asiatic and oriental and even day lilies do well in full sun, but they like their roots in shady cooler soil...."heads in the sun, feet in the shade" which you can achieve by planting lots of them so they shade the soil they are planted in. Try bulbs also, tulips are great as are gladiolus....they bloom with full color before it gets too hot. Also, do not forget that lots of color comes from the leaves of plants. Try coleus (there is a sun coleus that may wilt a little, but when watered perks right up), purple shield and Vinca (periwinkle) love it when it's hot. Dont rule out purple fountain grass. Many grasses are drought tolerant and provide really nice color and nice plumage for the winter months.....good luck.

I am not sure what kind of seeds are available in Zambia ..... but Impatiens are lovely, not fussy, and come in nice pinks, pale and dark oranges, and white ...
