Flowers went flat after watering?

Ok so last night I went and bought a hose and some plant food for some flowers. I got home put the food on the dirt and mixed it into the soil like the directions said. Then I gave the flowers a good watering. I woke up this morning and the plants are flat to the ground. They are still alive but flat like something sat on them. It only happened to three of the plants all the same kind (impatiens)....what might have happened to them? Was it too much water? Was it too much food? Not the right food?

Flowers went flat after watering?
Sounds like too much food and they got burned.
Reply:Too much pressure from your water hose - water the roots only.
Reply:HI,part of the answer is to much water. Boring Lecture time, Roots are delicate hairlike things which absorbe nutrients and water from the soil into the plant. The plant, in this case the Bizze lizze has a mechanism for distributing them around the plant called Evapoutranspiration. Basically water moves up the root, stem to the leaves and out through the holes or stomata in the leaves, it keeps the plant upright or turgid. It replaces our hard skeleton, you know our bones ! The system only works if the water keeps comming, all sorts of things can halt it. To much plant nutrient around the roots, Lack of water, chilling of the plant at night, to much water, overheating during the day. This is called wilting. The plant falls over and starts to go brown. End of lecture note. If you put Evapourtranspiration into the search engine you can get a more detailed explanation, Stomata and tugor are also well explained on the internet schools web sites.

It sounds like you hit the twin problems of water and chilling at night. The nutrients in the plant food just made it worse. You may be lucky and they may sprout again from the base if you cut off the damaged parts but I suggest that you get some new ones and only water them after nine am or lunch time if you can but never after five pm. I do all my window boxes, hanging baskets and containers before I go to work even though it means that I have to get up at 6am in the summer. It paid of this summer. I must admit that i overwatered my containers last year and nearly lost the lot from odema even though it was very hot!
Reply:Too much food can burn them. Too much water is unlikely. Water plus direct sun exposure can literally cook them. You say last night, so I guess the point about direct sun isn't relevant. But one of these two things I think is likely.
Reply:I did the same thing, to much water, I was hoping mine would dry out but they didnt.
